There's something dodgy about latitudes that place Winchester north of Westminster. I know cities can be defined in various ways, but seems odd to exclude Colchester and Rochester.

Personally, I would change it to 'settlements', thereby removing the argument about cities, and make it a list ordered by population rather than latitude. At the moment, this seems to be a list of 10 random cities ending in -ter.

Settlements would get you up at least as far as 58° 37'....

Sorry I didn't have a degree sign on my keyboard for the latitudes and don'thave the population data, as for cities and towns, I used wikipedia to see which ones are categorised as cities - so you can blame them if they miss some! If I include towns there are loads more not just Colchester and Rochester! Westminster as a city? It's not in my atlas so I assumed it was in the centre of London! Where do you find up-to-date population data?

Generally, citypopulation.de is used as the source for population data on Sporcle.

It's interesting (at least to me) to note that Westminster is the only one not derived from the Latin "castra" meaning "fort" which is the origin of both "-caster" and "-chester" placename elements in modern Britain. Generally speaking the "-caster" form is found in the former Danelaw while "-chester" predominates in the Saxon areas of the country.
