that is not the state motto, also last names should be acceptable for schultz and fitzgerald
Oct 9th, 2009 at 13:50 GMT
instead of asking for the state motto, State Nickname should be asked and the following are generally accepted: North Star State, Gopher State, and Land of 10,000 Lakes. The actual state motto is "The Star of the North"

Loon should be acceptable for "common loon"

Accept last names. Also you should accept "lake superior" and "gopher" or "golden gopher" for the U of M question.

Definitely need to change the motto but should also accept it in french, "L'etoile du nord" since that is the actual motto. Should NOT accept gopher for the mascot, they are officially the golden gophers, though the singular should be accepted. For famous people, Jessica Lange, Josh Hartnett, Craig Kilborn, Garrison Keillor, the Coen Brothers, Eddie Albert, Terry Gilliam, Jesse Ventura and Winona Ryder could be included. State nicknames: Star of the North, Land of 10,000 lakes, Gopher state would be acceptable. Electronics company Best Buy is headquartered here. As is 3M and Cargill (the largest privately owned company in the US). Aquatennial should be taken out as it isn't that well known and it is a Minneapolis celebration NOT a Minnesota celebration. Southdale was the first indoor mall in the country. And also borders Canadian provinces Ontario and Manitoba to the north. Just a few thoughts, but it is a great quiz idea!

"Goldy Gopher" should be accepted because that's the name of the U of MN mascot.

This was pretty easy because I live in MN, but just "Garland" or "Schultz" or "Fitzgerald" should have been accepted.

"The Star of the North" and "L'etoile du Nord" should both count for motto.

Schultz should definitely not be accepted. The mans name is Schulz. You can take Charles Schulz or just Schulz but NOT Schultz. It wasn't his name.

golden gophers is a nick name not the mascot the mascot is goldy gopher and north star state is a nickname not a motto

I agree with some of the earlier comments. Mascot is Goldy, but should accept Gophers as well. Should also accept Itasca instead of Lake Itasca.

By what stretch of the imagination is Rochester a large city? Minneapolis and St Paul are large cities, and they are both in southern Minnesota as well. "North Star State" is a rare nickname, Minnesotans are proud to live in "The Land of 10,000 Lakes" and it's what is on our license plate and state quarter. Abbreviations and last names should be acceptable, including Loon, Gophers, Itasca, Mayo, and "MOA" which is what most of us call the Mall of America. Hardly anyone cares about Aquatennial, even in the Twin Cities. There are several better corporations founded or headquartered here than Medtronic. And how can you put Prince on a list of Minnesotan celebrities and not Jesse Ventura??? Shame on you.
