Why is Jacksonville, FL not on this list. It's the largest city by land area in the lower 48 states. The metro area is 885 sq miles/2292 sq kilometers.

Please accept "NYC"; it's not like it will be confused with anything else. Took me forever to think of which metro area could be bigger than that.

I second Jax's question where is Jacksonville? makes me question the validity of this list and Alaska has 4 cities larger then Jacksonville..where does this info come from?

Apparently the info comes from citymayors.com, which lists Jacksonville at #65 and only 1,063 sq km (as opposed to the 2,292 being posted in these comments)

You need to note if there's a minimum population size. Otherwise, metro areas like Flagstaff are way larger than anything on this list. Also, I question their methodology --- they obviously aren't using the same definitions of "metro area" as the US Census Bureau, because Los Angeles County just by itself is more than 12,000 km^2, and that's just one county of several in the L.A. metro area.

As per the source regarding methodology City Mayors’ ‘Land area, Population and Density’ tables rank the 250 largest, by land area, cities and metropolitan as well as urban areas. The data was mostly collected between 2000 and 2005, however, in some cases figures from the late 1990s were used. The data was provided by Demographia who sourced much of the material from the United Nation and national statistical offices. But yeah, it should probably be annotated in the quiz description

OK, I finally sourced their measurements for the USA --- they're using Urbanized Area, not Metro Area: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_urban_areas

teamvatican: New Delhi is just a small part of the bigger city Delhi, so on it's own it's not that big.

I have made some changes based on many of your comments - however, I cannot superimpose my own or your suggestions regarding the data itself. The quiz is based on a specific source and the moment I add "Norfolk" or "Dortmund" or even worse, an entirely new urban area such a Jacksonville, I can no longer effectively cite my source. However, I did add "ruhr" (since it is a regional designation and not an actual city) and "NYC". I also added some notes.

Just to clarify, If citymayor.com did not include Dortmund or Cologne as a part of the Dusseldorf/Essen Metro/Urban area, then I cannot either. Same goes for Norfolk, despite the slightly counter-intuitive nature of the data.

peterbullock: Düsseldorf doesn´t belong to the Ruhr area, I wonder why the source takes Düsseldorf/Essen as a metro and not the Ruhr area (which doesn´t include Cologne and Düsseldorf), the Ruhr Area would be place 7 with 4435 km²

BTW, my individual research shows that since China is so nebulous in the way it defines its Urban Areas, it makes sense that their megatropolises were omitted from the study. Also, aside from staying true to my source, if I added every municipality from every Metro Area, there would be no room. Thus, places like New Delhi, Hoboken, Osasco and Montreuil are omitted from mention.

Norfolk is clearly part of the Virginia Beach urban area. I don't understand why it would be vitiating your sources to accept it.

To clarify - it's not a case of City Mayors not including Norfolk in the Virginia Beach urban area. It obviously does. If the number it gives is the same as that for the Virginia Beach UA designated by the US Census, it is easy enough to look up the map of that UA and notice that it clearly includes all of the city of Norfolk. The stupid naming rules come up with by the census for some reason mean that the name is just "Virginia Beach" rather than "Virginia Beach-Norfolk," and for that reason the visible answer should be "Virginia Beach," but there's absolutely no reason for Norfolk not to be an acceptable answer.

Perhaps a compromise would be to have Norfolk accepted as an answer but display only Virginia Beach in the quiz.

tricky one this, every country seems to adhere to different metro-area-boundary rules, in which the US seem to be the most flexible haha.

Crazy how the smallest U.S. state has one of the 50 largest metros (even if part of it goes into Massachusetts).
