Irish girls names are brilliant (Aoife, Niamh etc), amazing that they haven't spread around the world when you see some of these silly ones. Although Americans would probably just change the spellings and ruin them...

I find it funny that a lot of "unique" spellings of more common names are here, because you just know there are hundreds of mothers out there thinking, "I like this name, but I'm going to make sure nobody spells it the way I do so my kid can be 'special.'"

@JamesGR - no, Isabella was the most given name to girls born in the US in 2010 apparently. I very much doubt that it was more than 50% of all those girls though.

Some of the different spellings people give their kids now-a-days I find annoying. It's not a unique name just because you spell it wrong.

@brewoodlodger, so are names like Ashley, Beverly, Courtney, Kelly, Kelsey, Leslie, Lindsay, Shirley, Taylor, Tracy, and Whitney (and that's just names that have been fairly popular for girls sometime before/during the early 90s). People have been using surnames as given names for years.

Why do people think that replacing random vowels with "y" makes for good names? Poor girls will have to bear the consequences of their hipster parents' bad choices.

I can see why a few free spirits (I'm being kind here) reverse "Heaven" to name a kid "Nevaeh" or turn a fine name like "Zoe" into "Zoey," but how do these ideas catch on with so many? It's appalling that these two choices are so high up on the list.

@bizzlebiz13: I'm not saying your story isn't true, but it's also a pretty common urban legend (usually with Le-a instead of A-a). You usually hear it along with Orangejello and Yellowjello.

There are some lovely names but the spellings are a dyslexics nightmare. We all chose favorite names for our children but any that were difficult to spell were dropped, so that we and our extended family could spell them :-)

@bizzlebiz13 My sister's mother in law works with social services and she has run into multiple children called La-a (pronounced Ladasha). Seriously?!
Pillbug
:

The U.S. Social Security website lists every name given to at least five children every year since 1880. La-a or Laa does not appear in any of the lists. If a single person has run into MULTIPLE children with this name, there would have to be more than five born in a year in the whole country. So I'm tending toward the urban legend explanation.
