Paul Simon ran for president? Was Garfunkel his running mate? Now that's a ticket I could support.

'...we're going to south carolina and oklahoma and arizona and north dakota and new mexico - and we're going to california and texas and new york - and we're going to SOUTH DAKOTA and OREGON and WASHINGTON and MICHIGAN, and then we're going to washington d.c. to take back the white house...EEYAHHH!'

This is the first quiz for which the results actually look more like a normal curve.

I don't think I would have gotten any of the '88 Republicans if not for the debate sketch having been included on the SNL politics compilation.

I live in Iowa and I actually shook hands with a lot of these dill weeds and I still couldn't remember half of them.

I also live in Iowa, but never met any of them. Still only got about half of them right. At least I got all the actual nominees! I knew Harkin won back in 1992, but for some reason I blanked on him. (FYI- Harkin has been senator from Iowa since time began, it seems)

It's kind of interesting to see how few of the people who won actually wound up with the eventual nomination.

I remember Bill Russell, the latter-day Tom Lehrer on PBS, doing a bit on the 1988 Iowa caucus & New Hampshire primary: "There was Simon & Gephardt & Babbitt & yes, Hart / (who wasn't around in the fall) / Dukakis, who bored us, and Gore, who ignored us / and Jesse - the loudest of all!"

Iowa works better if you see it as a way weed out the dummies, not as a way to determine who the actual candidate should be.

We owe Iowa thanks for thinning the herd every year, although 25% of Iowans voted for Pat Robertson in 1988. You scared us that year.

Iowa Dems do much better than Republicans. We picked Obama (sadly, since I was precinct captain for Hillary.)

Hey, where's "Uncommitted"? As noted in the source, that's been one of the top five vote getters for the Dems in at least four of the listed caucuses. It's not like a primary - you don't have to make a choice. Also very odd to choose to start with 1980, since it was Carter's out-of-nowhere campaign in 1976 that made everyone start paying attention to Iowa in the first place.
