Thanks for taking my quiz! Suggestions welcome! This was by far one of the most interesting animal population quizzes I did. One of the bonus answers and the 16th ranked country BAFFLE me!

I should say that the 17th ranked one SHOULD baffle me as much as the other two, but it doesn't for some reason.

The 16th one baffled me but so did the 19th. I guess I didn't associate horses with that particular type of geography... the 17th one is also wierd, standing alone there without anyone near it, especially since one would expect more horses in the big countries nearby known for their wide open spaces and horseback nomads...

Yeah, Haiti?? Surprising, as much as Senegal, for the reason Indianwolf1992 says. Anyway, South America wins this time.

Absolutely fascinating, and really random. Once you've gone for the big, populous countries, you're at a bit of a loose end. There's no geographical or physical logic to some of the answers -- particularly 16, 17 and 19.

Senegal is the one that really baffles me. I get the North and South America answers; the colonial powers shipped over horses. But I guess there's no reason the Europeans couldn't have shipped horses to Senegal as well. A lot of these places may have a tradition of eating horse, as well.

Horses didn't work well in much of sub-Saharan Africa because of the Tsetse fly and sleeping sickness. But Senegal seems to be above the Tsetse fly zone.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that China has the most, but I was. Also it's funny how many South America has got.

Coming from a horse mad part of a horse loving country (UK) this was my first guess (get the obvious ones out of the way first). Nothing happened. Reserach shows that there are between 1 and 1.3 million horses in the UK, less than I was expecting but enough to place the UK in tenth place with the highest horse population in Europe (assuming that a lot of Russian horses are Asiatic). Are there any other obvious omissions?

@Happ_Hazard Chinese don't find horse meat a taboo like her in the west but its not that common Kazakhstan now they eat a lot of horse.

I was surprised Iceland wasn't in there since I've heard so much about the Icelandic breed. Apparently there are actually only about 80,000 there, but that's better than one for every four humans.

Given their much higher per capita horse population do the Chinese make horse noises when they encounter Mongolians in a similar way that sheep noises are sometimes directed at the Welsh by the English and at New Zealanders by Aussies? Not that I could condone such mildly racist behaviour myself of course.

It's amazing that horses aren't native to the Western Hemisphere and all that are in it were imported, but Western Hemisphere countries are 5 of the top 6 answers. Nifty quiz.

@zeppelinoid & The Will: According to the source for this quiz, the UK only has 384,000 horses, which puts them in 26th place. Id be interested to look at the data between these sources, because 1.3 million and 384k is a rather large discrepancy....

@EvanWill: I know exactly what the source says. It is clearly very inaccurate. The British Equestrian Trade Association's (BETA) National Equestrian Survey (2010-11) came up with an estimate of 988,000. There are 451,000 individuals who own at least one horse (but an average of two) plus 88,000 horses owned by the professional sector. This link gives more details: http://www.bhic.co.uk/facts-and-figures/beta-survey.html Other estimates are as high as 1.3 million (but include donkeys and mules (which are not very common) These figures do not include wild ponies which esist in a number of UK locations. I am not claiming that I know what the correct figure is only that the source is wholly inaccurate in respect of the UK horse population.
