In 1891-92 the bottom club were not re-elected to the Football League, but invited to join the new Second Division. From 1892-93 to 1896-97, promotion and relegation were decided by play-offs known as Test Matches.
No team was relegated in 1897-98 due to league expansion. The bottom two teams were relegated in 1898-99. Points are from 26 games in 1891-92, then from 30 games, and from 34 games in 1898-99. Two points were awarded for a win, one for a draw.
