| For those of you asking the reasoning behind the names of the days, I'll try to briefly explain:
In the Middle Ages, Portugal like every other country used modified names of Pagan gods for days of the week, with very similar names to the modern Spanish ones. In the Early Middle Ages there was one bishop of Galicia (Martin of Braga), which attempted to change the names of the days of the week from the pagan gods into the Catholic names for the days of the week (Dominica, Secunda feria, tertia feria, quarta feria, and so on and so forth). This decision made some success, though the pagan names were still widely used inter-mixed with the new names until the XV Century, when the pagan names began falling in disuse and the liturgical latin adaptations reigned supreme. |
