Edit information: Edited one incorrect spelling, and for the sake of consistency, I've omitted the vowel lenghtening at one surname and made it a "same surname, different kanji" answer. Tried having the kanji for the names, but there was an encoding problem, so I gave it up. Comments and corrections are welcome, enjoy!

One of my faves, even tho it's entirely useless information. Maybe I like it cos it recalls people i knew in Japan. Many thanks!

Looks like someone trying to steal the crown from bingo calls as the hardest dumbest quiz. http://www.sporcle.com/games/bingocalls.php (apparently it dosen't show up in the most difficult games anymore)

My strategy was going through my various video game and anime soundtracks and typing in the last names. Not the best strategy, but it at least got me 22.

Having an uncle who was in the U.S. Air Force in the early 1950s stationed in Japan and who married a Japanese girl helped me...I knew her maiden name was Ando and guessed that one. Kyu Sakamoto's song "Sukiyaki" was playing in my head as I managed to think of a few others before giving up. Interesting quiz!

How come all 100 names end in a vowel? I'm just curious, I don't know that much about Japanese culture.

@danzam: the Japanese language has a consonant-vowel syllable structure, so most Japanese words end with a vowel. The only consonant Japanese words are allowed to end in is n. It has nothing to do with the culture.

@danzam: IIRC all Japanese words have to end in a vowel or an 'n'. And I assume there's some reason why names don't end in 'n'. I'd like to personally thank Shigeru Miyamoto, Ichiro Suzuki, Hideo Kojima, Gedde Watanabe, Hiroyuki Sakai, and Hayao Miyazaki for their help on this quiz, because without them it would have just been embarrassing. 11/100

There are first names ending with N like Shin, Jun, Ken etc. And the surnames not ending with N...well, maybe at the deep bottom of the full list one or two can be found, but it's a very small possibility.

Who's Gedde Watanabe? I know Ken Watanabe from The Last Samurai and Batman Begins, but not Gedde.

@danzam: Gedde Watanabe is the karate guy in the movie "UHF", starring Weird Al Yankovic. That's his only role I know of. @okenter: I Originally put this quiz in the Language section, but the Sporcle adminstration has put in Entertainment. Those things happen. For those who put the names in the video game & anime credits, those fields many people use psuedonyms and those are mostly used to look interesting, not common.

I got 21, including the top nine. But I was aided by the fact that we had Japanese exchange students every year when I was a kid(my hometown has a sister city in Japan).

Gedde Watanabe is probably most famous for his role in "Sixteen Candles" as Long Duk Dong. People who helped me on this quiz: Kristi Yamaguchi, Shinzo Abe, Hayao Miyazai, and Haruki Murakami. Still only got 11.

Went through the Japanese baseball players I could remember from the Majors and the very few I remembered from the WBC. I figured on the 8th attempts it would finally accept Johjima or Fukudome, if only for my persistance...
