I tend to agree about Clemente and Robinson. But I think we've "made statues" of them (rightly so) and forgotten that at the time they both had combative personalities. Jackie played hard like Rose and often didn't get along with teammates (esp. black teammates he felt didn't fight racism) so probably rubbed people wrong. I think with Roberto the press dubbed him "sullen" and "moody" when really it was a language/cultural barrier. And of course the racism of the press played into it. I've only read about these men, too young sadly to have watched them. But yeah, if Rose got in, why not Jackie since they played the same way. |
