Great quiz. Are North Carolina 1810 and North Dakota 1870 missing for a reason?

codejlandt: Yes. No good records exist for those years in those states to determine which city was the largest. A lot of information from the 1810 Census for NC has gone missing, and the 1870 Census neglected to separate out population counts for cities and towns in Dakota Territory.

San Francisco was the largest city in California from 1850 - 1910, not 1950 - 1910.

Great quiz. Who knew Key West was once the largest city in Florida? Oh...I guess about 19% of us. And thank you Bonanza for giving me Virginia City!

Props to Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Vermont, and Wisconsin for having stable population distributions.

@Enigma9994: actually, outside of New York (city), New York's (state) population distribution has been wild. For example, Albany used to be a large city, and now it's average sized.

I'll give a shiny new nickel to anyone who gets 1860 North Dakota, and has never actually lived in North Dakota. Its population today is about 600 people.

People who get 1880 North Dakota may get 1860 from the same source(great show btw). Though so far 1860 is beating both 1880 and 1870.

Maybe you shouldn't have the answers with the same hint grouped, because no matter how far I zoom it out, I have to scroll endlessly. It's a great quiz though!

A better idea to reduce scrolling would be to scrap the alphabetical ordering and instead order by number of answers to make the rows more even. That would keep the format, but make it about than 10 rows shorter.

The clues for Alabama are backwards. 1910-2010 should be below 1830-1900.

The state I completely filled out first was Alaska, because they're the only real cities in Alaska. btw I do love Alaska.

@Beatlezfann: I don't believe so. At least not at the last census. Louisville incorporated many surrounding areas, picking up many people and leaving Lexington far behind.

The time scale for Alabama seems inverted (that is, for all the other states, 2010 is at the bottom, but here it is at the top). Other than that, great quiz!

Just got a 96/121. This was a very good quiz. When in doubt on the older clues, try the state capital or another historical city from that state (Saint Augustine was one).
