| As stated in the game note, these are not words that are totally different in British vs American English, such as bonnet/hood, flat/apartment, lorry/truck, but words that are basically the same, only with different spellings. These are the common ways to spell them in British or American English. A few spellings could be argued that they are acceptable the other way, but they are not the most commonly used or are rarely used. American dictionaries will list those spellings with the introduction "chiefly British." Some words have slight pronunciation differences, but the words have the same meaning and are very similar. Some root words would be the same, but when a suffix (ed, ing, etc.) is added, the variation in spelling occurs. :) |
