	Amazing what the brain holds on to after so many years! I remember singing this in grade school all the time in the '80s, and as I thought through it, slowly but surely random bits and pieces came back to me. 266/273, and many fond memories.

	A teacher taught this to my class when I was six. It always made me cry, because I thought Jackie Paper had died during the night. I'm surprised I remembered half the lyrics!

	This is one of those songs that made me vow to hold on to at least some parts of my childhood. Like all other young boys, Jackie Paper became a man, and as a man myself, I often struggle to remember many things from my youth. There are many memories, though, that will never leave me.

	This is the first song I ever memorized on the piano, so combining that with the amazing lyrics (not to mention it's total awesomeness as a song in general), this song will always hold a special place in my heart. I hope everyone teaches this song to their children so that it can gain the infamy it so deserves.

	I love this song! Listened to it on a vinyl record over and over to learn all the lyrics so I could sing it (before internet lyric sources!) Peter Yarrow spoke to my school district a few years back about his anti-bullying campaign Don't Laugh at Me. Truly a gentle soul.

	@triviahappy (and @sproutcm) - I'm happy to know I wasn't the only one who grew up thinking "ceiling wax" - I never bothered to ask anyone, I just assumed it was like so many other things I didn't understand and that one day I would come across it and find out what it was used for (leaks from the apartment above perhaps?). Thanks for bringing back some bittersweet memories.

	I also thought they were saying ceiling wax when I was little :P And that Jackie died... I remember after I saw Toy Story, the bit with Jessie being unwanted after the girl grew up, I finally worked it out.

	:( :( :( Such a sad song... Poor Puff... I never formally learned this song, but my dad occasionally sang it as "...and garnished him with sealing wax and other fancy stuff" and a couple of other differences.

	I love this song. I actually Met Peter Paul and Mary once through my school and me and about 30 other kids sang this with them. Got 100 percent on it mostly because I still watch (mostly listen to) the 3 Puff the Magic Dragon cartoons one of which sings and illustrates the song.

	I only sang the first two verses to my children because it was just too sad. My mother didn't know this and sang the whole thing to them once at bedtime. They burst into tears.

	FWIW, a children's perfomer who's name I can't recall wrote a 4th verse about Jackie Paper's daughter finding Puff in his cave and bringing the life back to him. Takes the sting out a bit.

	^^@The_Road_Guy: I learned an unauthorized 4th verse at camp: "Then one shiny morning, as Puff walked down the strand, looking down to his surprise saw footprints in the sand; a voice said 'Mister Dragon, don't you look so sad -- my name is Jenny Paper; I was sent here by my dad.'" (Cue chorus in present tense: Puff now "lives" by the sea, "frolicks" in the autumn mist, etc.). Clearly changes the pathos of the original, and some may consider it sacrilege, but that final verse always made my little boy smile when I sang it to him. Plus, I like that the tradition was carried on by a girl.

	I took my mother to see Peter,Paul, and Mary in concert for her birthday. It was late in the concert when they started this song and we both started to cry. And not the kind of crying where you can just dab your cheek with a tissue and be done with it, but the kind of sobbing where you have trouble catching your breath. We would have looked crazy except that everyone around us was also weeping. Mary died just a few weeks after that concert.
