| Ah, now over here a pudding doesn't have to be a dessert! I said in the quiz description that the puddings mentioned are only mainly desserts, not that all of them are. In Britain the word 'pudding' has several definitions. Although one meaning of 'pudding' is indeed 'dessert' or 'dessert course' (and I have used this definition), I have also used the widespread British definition of 'a dish, usually containing flour or another cereal product, that is boiled, baked or steamed' and doesn't have to be sweet. Yorkshire pudding (which, as far as I'm aware of, has always been savoury and could therefore never have been a dessert) is a pudding in the latter sense of the word, as is steak and kidney pudding. [Incidently, I only just thought of steak and kidney pudding, so I'll add it into the quiz). As my quiz doesn't only cover dessert puddings, I thought Black Pudding could be included too, as a third definition of pudding is 'a sausagelike preparation made with minced meat or various other ingredients stuffed into a bag or skin and boiled.' |
