| There are a couple of Malinda's in my family tree in the 1800s. There are also several Hulda's and Huldah's. Also a couple of Phebe's. Just a little trivia for those who are interested: Looking at the source, it appears they took the data for this decade from the US Census of 1850. Which would mean the names are actually the names of women who were born 1801-1810 - not all the babies, just the ones who survived until 1850. In those days, a census taker would go door to door and write down the names and ages of people living in a household. The census taker often spelled names the way he thought they should be spelled rather than asking the householder. Spellings for words and names weren't completeley standardized at that time and many people were illiterate, so the spelling depended on who was writing it down. In my own family tree, my surname has several different spellings - the same person might be recorded one way on census, another way in marriage records and a different way in birth records. |
