This might be a 5 globe quiz if you change the last answer. Generally sporcle quizzes use Timor Leste instead of East Timor. You should at least accept both, and there's no reason to force alphabetical order (unless of course there is a reason like space limits in which case nevermind).

that is absoultely right, @ambition. I will say Name the countries that have a cardinal direction in at least one common form of their name in alphabetical order. I think i will keep the alphabetical order part though, just for a little challenge!

According to sporcle and CIA there are presently 195 countries. There will be 196 beginning July 9. Also you last question was not specific to say countries of the world.

@kellkris, my source said that it was 196. i used the united nations standards. i also accepted 194 because kosovo and the vatican are often disputed. for more information on that you can check my source.

Vatican is never disputed, it's been independent since 1929 and everyone accepts that....

according to the U.N, there are some thigns that are different with the Vatican and Kosovo. It is really hard to udnerstand and explain, but it goes something like this: These two countries are not fully recognized by the U.N, but they are in some associations linked with them. You can probably find out more information from my source. Sadly, though, since i did have various sources, my link will take you to the wikipedia page. sorry.

Kosovo is independent and is recognized by most of the world. There has to be an easier way to ask the least question. Great quiz!

Okay guys. Before I published this quiz, I actually e-mailed it to the geography editor, psubball1, asking for his opinion on the area of this quiz that may be disputed by some, and he says that I should just say it without the '(including the Vatican and Kosovo)'. So I changed it accordingly. If there is anything else that you may have your opinions on, feel free to comment. I wilol appreciate anything that you say.

Vatican is fully recognised but has not joined the UN. Switzerland only joined the UN a few years ago (even if it's one of the UN's three main HQs) but it was still recognised as a country before that

The quiz currently calls for 194 before, 195 after. This is not consistent with the published countries of the world quiz. Sporcle should be internally consistent even if there is debate in the outside world.

There were 195 countries before July 9, not 194. Also, East Timor has properly changed its name to Timor Leste, though some people still call it East Timor (Like me!). But good quiz elsewhere!
