Great quiz! - highlights the battle ground states for the next election quite nicely.

Since Nebraska's vote can be split between multiple candidates, Obama did win part of that state in 2008. So it's hard to say with certainty if it has not gone both ways in the past 4 elections. Since McCain did get more electoral college votes then Obama did from that state, I suppose its fine to think that it has never gone democratic in the recent past. But there is room for some confusion there. Either way, it was a fun quiz.

@Skogs Very good point, but I'd like to think anyone who realizes that would probably guess the rest of the states before that one just to be safe. I don't want to make the instructions any more confusingly worded than they already are, so I will probably not say anything since it is (hopefully) only an issue for the one state.

I think you have to state the issue with Nebraska in the note. A simple explanation would be "based on total popular vote in each state." While the electoral vote was split, by adding a note that you are going by popular, not electoral votes, the issue with Nebraska could be eliminated.

@gowhere: I think you need to ignore the Southern states won by Clinton in 1996 if you are looking for 2012 battleground states. If they come into play then it's already all over for Romney.

Doh, I have to remember to read notes, because I skipped over it just like always and chose NE when going through the list alphabetically. The note is clear and makes sense, you just have to read it!

@davebesag: Agreed. Those states would be gravy to the Obama campaign

I can't believe I missed Arkansas! I had it filed away as solid Republican. After the quiz I remembered where Clinton came from...

Doesn't really seem necessary to hide the answers you don't get.

I love the term Purple State, I've not come accross it before, though as I know very little about American politics... I just got more than half - from hearing that both candidates were visiting various states and by pure guess work :-)

lol I tried and retried just as both things were corrected: First try I missed an answer and it was hidden and they were in random order, and then on my second try I figured "Okay, I'll just type them all alphabetically fast and see which one I missed"... and this time they were appearing IN alphabetical order! Saved a lot of energy.

@zak6009 I turned off random answer order briefly, but I think it's a bit trickier if they're turned on.

Ah, another quiz where I type in the three or four answers I'm pretty sure are right, then just start naming the rest of the states as fast as I can. :D

Good quiz, but why is Nebraska a bonus answer? It's kind of the ultimate purple state, having gone to both parties in the same election!

Just named as many states as I could think of, minus the strongholds. Obviously I can type faster than I thought.

@Jdawg1015: Are you from the US? If so, it begs the question, where have you been for the past year and a half?

Good quiz, but small gripe--please insert the term "presidential" before "candidate." Rather than just random speed typing, I was thinking, okay, who had governors of both partties recently, etc, as well as presidential choices.

Too much time, really. I only *knew* about 4 or 5 of these and had plenty of time to just type in random states until I got them all.

Good quiz - but probably better as a clickable quiz...or with a lot less time...

You might want to change the title of the quiz to specify a specific year rather than "last 4 elections" because that definition on Monday is not the same thing today on Wednesday (and would have at least 7 fewer answers today).

For me, being a Brit, it was more like 'Can you name some states that you know, they won't all work?' :P
