	Wouldn't accept Tasman for the discoverer but is probably a bit unwise as the Maori had discovered it a couple of hundred years before the Europeans (it was uninhabited until that point)

	Golden: Recent historial consensus is that the Moriori colonisation of New Zealand is in fact a myth. There is little conclusive evidence to suggest another race arrived in New Zealand in any great numbers before Maori and sociological and physical differences between mainland Maori and the inhabitants of the Chatham Islands is due to 700 years of isolation from each other after they arrived in the same migration from the South Pacific.

	Golden, the Moriori were a group of Maori who left New Zealand to settle in the Chatham Islands. They did not predate the Maori; there is strong archeological, linguistic, and genetic evidence demonstrating this (which doesn't stop some confused people from making the claim). PublicEnemy- no, they are really called the North and South Islands.

	The North and South Islands actually have No "Official" names. Though there is talk of making these names official along with their Maori equivalent. Im aware this is a copy of the USA/UK ones, I made it because I live in NZ and I didn't see anyone else bothering to make one. I'm aware that New Zealand sign language is an official language and I chose to omit it as it isnt "spoken", dont mean to cause any offense. And also, No I coul'nt think of 50 things. Couldnt think of anything that anyone that doesnt live in New Zealand might know.

	The Moriori are a myth. Gosh this myth was disestablished in 1975!!!! i'm surprised how many people think moriori came before maori. one and the same honey. god save the queen is also an official anthem for new zealand.

	The building of Parliament is not the beehive. the beehive is the home of the executive ie the governemnt. Parliament is in fact situated next to it in a building known as 'Parlaiment House'

	The Beehive is one of the so called "Buildings of parliament" and it is far easier to put in "parliament building", rather than "executive wing of the New Zealand parliament buidlings" I think most people will know what I'm talking about.

	I think that it's a bit misleading to say Cook named New Zealand. He simply anglicised the second name the Dutch had named it, (Nova Zeelandia). Maybe the question should be something else less ambiguous eg. First person to circumnavigate both islands.

	@wagon. Fair point, but I think it gets the point across and no one person is definitely known to have first called it Nova Zeelandia. You may also note that most of the questions are one or two words, so putting in "first person to circumnavigate the country" makes it a bit wordy, which is something I was trying to avoid.

	Yes I understand where you're coming from, but there must be something more definitive. Did Tasman actually come ashore? Perhaps 'first ashore' could work. (It's a great quiz anyway). @Tabasco,@Golden, The closest country depends on whether you count Norfolk Island territory. Norfolk Island is about 760km from North Cape. Whereas New Caledonia (mainland) is 1465km. The closest mainland Australia is about 1487km from West Cape (South Island) to Tasmania. Mind you you can also say Macquarie island is 650 km from Auckland Island

	I'm not sure if Abel Tasman himself set foot ashore but 4 of his crew were killed by Maori. Indicating that his ships must have atleast made harbour and some crew come ashore. Cook was the first person to map the entire coastline so I was thinking along the lines of "mapped by" but that seems even more vague. Maybe I should replace the question with something else altogether. Any suggestions?

	My understanding was that the landing party was attacked by Maori in canoes before landing, and were unable to come ashore.

	Nice quiz. Interestingly, a significant portion of the Taieri Plains, southeast of Dunedin, lie below the -2m contour. It is no more than a couple of square kilometres (at best!) in area, and is located on the western side of Dunedin Airport.
