Great quiz! But you are missing the UK, and did the Roman Empire really never contain part of Russia, Ukraine, or Iran? I have seen some maps where the northern Black Sea area was part of the Empire, and the eastward extent of the Empire during Trajan's reign was such that some regions of Iran may well have been in it for some time.

Whoops, I don't know how I forgot the UK. But that's been fixed. As far as eastward expansion, the source I was going off of didn't include those, but it got awfully close. I imagine that record keeping 2,000 years ago made it tough to determine where exactly the boundaries were though. I went with what seemed to be the countries that were definitively controlled by Rome.

Loved this quiz - would have found it helpful if the answers were alphabetical or even organised by continent - I found it hard to remember what I had already typed!

Great quiz! I was considering making one like this. I agree with the idea of organizing by continent, too. The Kingdom of Bosporus in the Ukraine and Southern Russia was a client of Rome, but I believe it still maintained its independence for the most part.

I might be wrong but what about Czech Republic and Slovakia. They conquered all the countries around them so those two must be included too surely.

They didn't conquer everything around them, there were tons of barbarians in northern Europe who kept them from expanding much in that direction. They didn't even conquer Scotland for the same reason.

I thought that Rome did control part of the Ukraine - Crimea to be specific. The Bosporan Kingdom was a client state of the Roman Empire, and there are many reliable historical maps which include the Bosporan Kingdom within the official imperial Roman boundaries. The Bosporan Kingdom covered the Crimea, southern Ukraine, and Russia's Black Sea coast.

Well done tjconn728 a good quiz and a source is quoted. For a lot of countries archaeologists and historians still argue over if permanent settlements were established, only army encampments were built or indeed if artefacts found were merely a sign of trading, Ireland is a good example of this!

You could probably reduce the time to 4 minutes.

Ukraine should be included at least. They had the Crimea at their greatest/, not just a client in later times. Nice to have a quiz that doesnt force you to type out herzegovina with bosnia though!

I would maybe put some kind of qualification or asterix for Iraq, Kuwait, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. They were incorporated as provinces for only a few years at the end of Trajan's from about 115-117.

I've updated the quiz to include some of the disputed territory as bonuses. The source I'm using didn't list Ukraine anywhere though, so that is still not in there. If anybody has an alternate source that says differently, I'd be happy to use it and update the quiz accordingly.

According to Wikipedia, the settlement of Olbia, in modern Ukraine (there were several Olbias), was in the empire for a while, in the province of Lower Moesia... and I know wiki alone isn't a good authority, but this is mentioned in several articles, with published sources referenced, so seems to be at least an arguable case.

i'd question having the whole of the UK included, they never went to Scotland or Northern Ireland. if i'm wrong then ok but i'm fairly certain on that. good quiz though

ipw88: the reason is probably because the quiz is asking for territory within modern countries, and the UK is the modern country that contains England. LOL and I agree on not having to type Herzegovina, why do so many hoity-toity quizzers make you do that?

like every map I have ever seen from this time period in Rome's history (for you include other provinces from the height of expansion) shows Roman territory encircling the Black Sea, so you should have Moldova Ukraine and Russia, I don't konw about this client kingdom stuff, but the title says territory, not specifically provinces, so be consistant please

I checked the source and it looked like the Romans took control of a little bit of Saudi Arabia. I am not certain if they took enough territory for it to count but I will leave that to you. Great quiz!

Ukraine, Poland and Monaco should have been answers, as the Romans did extend to parts of these countries. Russia and Belarus might be considered as well...

Maybe make it similar to other Empire quizzes by adding years and putting in a hidden column showing which parts. Just for the purpose of added education.
