Where's Germany, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro? Also, Norway was in union with Sweden at the time.

Germany was divided after WW2, Sweden and Norway were together until that time so they can be counted separately but I think I will put them together. Romania is now up there. Serbia and Montenegro were encompassed into Yugoslavia therefore did not stay independent.

I disagree with your answer for Germany based on other inclusions. Since you accept that countries which were occupied continued to exist - e.g. France, and that countries have grown and shrunk over that period and that major shifts in political organization (Russia/USSR) did not break the chain, then, the FRG (West Germany) was the continuous successor of the 3rd Reich and East Germany was effectively occupied for 50+ years.

The Third Reich ceased to exist in 1945. The FRG (and GDR) was established in 1949. That doesn't seem very continuous to me. And the occupation of France during World War II, when the Germans continued to recognize and have diplomatic relations with a French government, was very different from what happened to Germany after the war.

Luxembourg was annexed to Germany in 1942, so using that reasoning it shouldn't be on this quiz.

Germany annexed Luxembourg but never took control or occupied it leaving it in political control and retaining its national status. That means it was never divided at any point.

What are you talking about that they never occupied it or took control? They conquered it in 1940, annexed it in 1942 (as part of Reichsgau Moselland). Other countries (Denmark, Netherlands, etc.) they occupied but never annexed, but Luxembourg they treated differently.

Luxembourg was incorporated fully into the Grossdeutsches Reich just the same as Austria. If you want to grasp on to the fact that there was a government-in-exile, I suppose you can argue that. But I find that somewhat unavailing.

On the Germany issue--Germany was only occupied; it was never annexed. And just because there were two "Germanies" doesn't mean that there wasn't a "Germany." So I would include Germany.

Germany was completely divided into halves, you can't say that it remained intact. You can't compare Luxembourg to Austria because Austria was part of Germany where Luxembourg was still its own nation
