Typical. The first -Stan I typed was Turkmenistan then after that I decided that the -stan's must not use Cyrillic. What an idiot! Good game. Surprised I haven't seen it before

Why is Mongolia just a bonus answer? Cyrillic is widely used, much more than the native Mongolian script.

It would be interesting to know why only half of the stans use the cyrillic alphabet when the rest use something else (latin?).

They don't use Latin, but they used a Latin based language, such as English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese,...

You should add Uzbekistan as a bonus answer. They switched to Latin in the mid-1990s but it didn't quite take. Books and newspapers continue to be published in Cyrillic, including works sponsored by the state, and most citizens prefer Cyrillic.
