Nice quiz, but Laos has 2 syllables. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/laos

While the majority of English speakers (and Laotian itself) pronounce 'Laos' with one syllable with a diphthong [usually an 'ow' or 'au' sound], there are some who pronounce it as two separate sounds and two syllables [usually 'lay-os'].

Seeing as the native word is 'Lao' [pronounced 'lau'] and the spelling we have is from French, which doesn't pronounce the 's', 'lay-os' makes as much sense as 'spa-een' (Spain) or 'ah-oos-tri-a' (Austria).

'Louse' seems to be the general guidance... must admit I've always pronounced it with two syllables in the past so I've learned something today!
