I know that, strictly speaking, Alexander didn't rule, conquer or visit any of the modern countries, since they didn't exist in the 4th century BC (maybe with the exception of Armenia and India, which weren't countries, but the regions were at least known under these names). But you get the drill, it's ancient regions which are in modern countries.

It's a cool quiz; it's clear what you're getting at. But please shorten the time. I think some people do well on all quizzes of this type because they can name all the Asian nations from memory in just a few minutes, even if they know nothing about Alexander's reign. Note how MACEDONIA isn't higher on the list of how many players guessed it?

I think you're right, I'll shorten the time. It's true about people just typing country names, but who cares, the quiz is here for those interested in history. Maybe Macedonia is too obvious, and so people tend to forget it! It happens sometimes.

Is the order significant or is it just a general West-East sweep?

It's not significant. Also, I don't think it follows Alexander's route completely accurately - it's an imprecise West-East sweep, if you like :)

Love the quiz. Here's a quiz on some of the battles he fought if you feel so inclined... http://www.sporcle.com/games/wolfeman/battles_alexander

How about Cyprus and Kuwait? Good quiz otherwise ;-)

Dommel, thank you for your comment. I'll add Kuwait and Cyprus as bonus answers.

I think Romania should be in there. From the map, he got as far north as the the Danube, and there's a section of Romania's Black Sea coast that's south of the Danube.

I thought that Serbia (and Kosovo) belong to this list, but Alex intentions was evidently in east, not in Balkan peninsula. Every day learn something new, thanks to Sporcle!

re: Macedonia's placement, it's worth noting that the center of the ancient kingdom of Macedon that Alexander ruled was in modern Greece, not Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
