The thing that sticks out for me here is that I'm from Buffalo and both of my teams are in this....

@moflaffle I hear ya. I'm from Rochester, myself... I also cheer for the Mariners in MLB... and they are also on the list. I guess that all makes sense, since every year is full of disappointment in all sports for me.

the bills at least got to the SB 4x and lost....the Vikings same deal and they just got there this year....my Browns have never been to the SB, they lost the team for 3 yrs, and they have been absolutely horrible ever since.....how are we not #1?? Can't even win at a most tortured franchise competition :(

It feels good to be a Jets fan. =( It's ESPN, I wasn't expecting too good a list.

Awful list...how are the Lions, Clippers, Nationals/Expos, Orioles, Mets, Nets, Islanders, Brewers, or Pirates on this list? Instead we have teams like the Jets, Cavs, Eagles, and Vikings??? Makes no sense to me at all.

For everyone complaining did you not read the ESPN article and read the criteria that they used to make the list?

You totally missed the point of the article. It isn't really a list for the most tortured franchises. Its a list for teams eligible for a level 1 loss according to bill simmons.

I actually quit this quiz early when the Lions were not on the list. No much of a list really, is it?

Some of the criteria used explain certain absences. To qualify you needed some gut-wrenching losses in recent years, huge local support and coverage, and it helped if your whole city didn't have any other successful teams - which might explain the Lions absence. Also cold weather is preferable - as they figured Padres fans could never be properly tortured.

I stopped playing when the Pittsburgh Pirates didn't show up. You should supply ESPN's (Bill Simmons') criteria in the instructions or else how are we supposed to know what they're thinking? 18 losing seasons in a row should qualify.

you can ask me or any eagles fan: ALL OF PHILADELPHIA DIES INSIDE EVERY YEAR. its been consistent this way for about 10 years now. they should be much higher.

Similar to what Mongoose said, this was compiled by ESPN's Bill Simmons who outlined criteria of not having won in 30+ years IN THE SAME LOCATION with a couple of soul crushing losses thrown in for good measure. That means orioles (won in 83), Nationals (just moved) aren't eligible. I'm not supporting the criteria, just explaining it.

I live near Toronto, and let me tell you, those poor Maple Leaf fans have been tortured for 40+ years, and there's still no light at the end of their tunnell.

I remember the article on espn. To be actually tortured, the team has to give the fans a ray of hope that greatness is about to happen (Such as making the Super Bowl many times and losing like the Bills and Vikings) Team like the Lions, Pirates, etc. have not put out a competitive team in many years that makes the fans think "Hey this is our year"

The Cavs are on here because losing in the playoffs to Michael Jordan's Bulls five times in seven years is defined as torture. That includes "the shot" over Craig Ehlo.

Alot of ppl are saying teams that are bad should be on here. Bad teams aren't tortured though, because they know they're bad and don't have hope. Tortured teams are the ones that continuously get rly close, but never come out on top.

@caramba: pittsburgh pirates? whine on with your two championships last year pittsburgh. plus the pirates have one of the best stadiums and cheapest tickets in baseball to go with their gutted roster, and no expectations, and they won in '79.

@caramba: I'm not saying read the source before the quiz because that defeats the purpose. I am just suggesting that once people finish the quiz or give up and wonder why "team x" wasn't included that they read the source before posting things like "since Team X didn't make the list the quiz sucks".

I cannot believe that there is not a single Boston team on here. They are the teams that will do good all season only to completely let everything go down the drain when it really matters. How is that not torturing us fans?
