Right. Went with the books because I'm pretty sure the entire poem wasn't in the movies.

@ Kevin: I'm pretty sure it was in the beginning of Fellowship, though I might be confusing that with the beginning of the 70's animated movie. I know for sure that Gandalf recited part of it to Frodo in Fellowship. Still...not something I'd hang "retard-centric" on.

No, he just recited the abbreviated version. Actually, if I'm not mistaken, the inscription on the ring is mere the sixth and seventh lines. The rest was from a song/poem of lore.

I make you right Kevin, it is just the 6th and 7th. I would add that maybe poor mungar couldn't struggle through the long books or keep his attention on something for 3 hours, therefore lashes out at others to hide his own ineptitudes. Or maybe he's just an idiot!

Yeah, he recited the abbreviated version in the Shire when he tossed the ring in the fire at Bag End. But, I was pretty sure, in the opening scenes that depict Isildur cutting the ring from Sauron's finger, that the whole poem was recited. Okay. I need to stop. I've met my geek quotient for the day.

25/25. In the movies, the sixth and seventh lines are said by Gandalf to Frodo early on, and perhaps a few other times. The entire thing might be in the prologue, though I'm not sure. And of course the entire thing is in the books. =P

Yeah, the entire thing is recited by Galadriel during the prologue, or at least a version of it as I'm not certain it is exact, word for word.

i believe a varied version is recited by galadriel in the prologue, it gives the basic meaning but it's not the poem.

I am a big fan of the movies and the books, long as they are. Nut I'm pretty sure the ring itself couldn't possibly have an entire paragraph etched on it. I would imagine the part that Gandalf recited in the book and movie directly off the ring itself was only the last three lines of the quiz, and not the whole thing.

The films were actually fairly good, I guess, but from a literary perspective the books were terrible. Many major literary critics put LOTR in their worst 10 books of all time. Tolkien was, admittedly, very good at creating fantasy worlds, but then quite poor at the actual writing. I say this as a creative writing student, but even so it's just my opinion. I personally thought mungar's comment was one of the wittiest I've heard on here in a while. :)

@Joe_Ball: Could you offer a citation for that claim? "Many major literary critics put LOTR in their worst 10 books of all time." seems to be a statement that someone would just say without actually knowing anything about. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the book, but I wouldn't be surprised if the statement were true. I'd just like to know which literary critics, and where I can find their lists.

Yes, Joe_Ball, that's why Time put it on their 100 best novels of the Twentieth Century list. Tolkien's complete lack of descriptive language, literary devices and symbolism makes Lord of the Rings a terrible read, something that no one should ever bother letting their eyes touch. For the exact same reason, Shakespeare is considered a total hack.

LOTR is great book from the literary perspective. Maybe it's just too hard for some people. Many people can't concentrate on things. They like more simple and straight language. No offense. It's not sign of low intelligence or something. It has nothing to do with other mental abilities.

I knew most of the words. It's a good thing I read the first book. It was actually how many rings they each got that almost tripped me up.

mattj, Time isn't the god of literature. there are different ways to view literature, and obviously through the lenses that joe_ball's literary critics were looking, tolkien is not a skilled author. read a book about literary criticism instead of using unqualified sarcasm that a clever 9-year-old could come up with.

@Isaac: While I don't particularly buy the Time list either, I would still like to know which literary critics are saying that. We've got this ominous phantom "PEOPLE WHO KNOW WHAT THEIR TALKING ABOUT" and nobody really is willing to identify them. It's like the Wizard of Oz for goodness sake. WHO says it? Joe_Ball offers his opinion as a creative writing student, but my friends in college graduated with creative writing degrees, and all of them enjoyed LOTR.

Hey guys, thanks for clarifying who said what part of the poem at the beginning of Fellowship. I knew I had heard part of it during the opening scenes; I guess I just assumed it was the whole thing. Isaac: try reading my entire argument and not focusing just on the opening salvo. Perhaps then you'd see where my point was. And the shift key is to the left of Z and to the right of /, just for reference.

Matt J, I simply was reminded of the time when at Mooby's the two nerdy guys (like myself) started saying half of this inscription. I thoroughly enjoyed the LotR, but Clerks II was hilarious, and I believed people would see my comment and chuckle.
