Although I think he should prioritize his head-to-head records against Nadal above all else (obviously, it stands to reason that the number one ranking could well follow on from that). He really has to go for that French Open (it's a shame he got knocked out by Guga in 2004, which is starting to look like his best opportunity for the title) and I'd love to see him regain Wimbledon - which is where he belongs, in my humble opinion. Of course, as a Brit I'm slightly biased here!
His performance at the US Open will hopefully have restored his confidence and self-belief. It'll be interesting to see how he performs in Madrid next week, where Nadal's also entered into the draw. At this stage in his career, I don't think Federer needs to prove himself to anybody (least of all amateur admirers like myself), but it'd be nice to see the Nadal rivalry a little less one-sided from now on, don't you think?
Of course, with Djokovic and Murray now in the mix (and others like Del Potro and Tsonga rising fast), who's to say that either of the two "veterans" will finish 09 as #1? Men's tennis is in quite a healthy place right now, whichever way one looks at it, I think. |
