Something doesn't add up then. By tonnage, Oakland is busier than LA or LB (smaller when the two are combined, as they usually are). By containers, Oakland is number three behind LA/LB and NY. Can you link to your source?

My source is a book - The World Almanac and Book of Facts, 2009, page 118. I'm not sure why Oakland isn't on their list - it doesn't say.

Extremely suprised at the answers. Perhaps ports include oil, because there are plenty of Louisiana cities on here, and Valdez. Shocked that inland cities (Pittsburgh, Duluth, St Louis, Huntington) have larger ports than major/important coastal cities (Boston, Seattle/Tacoma, Baltimore, Norfolk).

In Duluth-Superior's case, the major commodities handled would be coal, iron ore, limestone, and grain. Duluth-Superior handles not only Great Lakes ships but ocean-going ships from around the world that travel the length of the St. Lawrence Seaway system.

How is "south Louisiana" a port? All of the Louisiana answers seem to be areas rather than actual ports.

Port of South Louisiana is the name of the port: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_of_South_Louisiana. Here is a source with actual figures: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ports_in_the_United_States.
