Using their postal abbreviations name the ten states with the HIGHEST and the ten states with the LOWEST percentage of their land owned by the Federal Government. But be CAREFUL not to get the highest and lowest answers mixed up or the game will end! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Federal Government owns approximately 29% of the land area in the United States. Of this, 30% is used for Forest and Wildlife, 22% is used for Grazing, 16% is used for Parks and Historic Sites and remaining uses combined represent 32% of the total acreage.

	Good quiz idea, but the auto-ending for wrong answers is really annoying. I don't live in the US, so don't know US postal abbreviations. Tried to type "Nevada" for the first answer and the quiz immediately ended.

	Yep, it's your love of abbreviations again! ;) I had the same problem with Alaska, and though I see why we have to answer in order, and could maybe go along with ending the quiz on a ludicrous choice, I found that having to worry about using the right postal abbreviation interfered with my thinking about the topic of the quiz -- and I'm from the US and know them pretty well. It's an interesting topic, with a great source. Why not let it stand on its own?

	Sorry guys! Since I tested the quiz only using the abbreviations, I missed seeing the problems caused when both the state names and abbreviations were accepted. Thanks for pointing that out. This quiz is an experiment for me. I wanted to make a quiz that was almost more of a puzzle than a quiz. One that rewarded careful deliberation and punished guessing. And yet one that was not impossibly difficult or needlessly annoying. The quiz was always intended to make use of state abbreviations. The state names were added as alternatives without my realizing that they would cause the problems mentioned. So I've removed the state names and kept the state abbreviations. Of course, not all experiments are successful, but I hope this one will lead to more experiments and ultimately to a quiz format that may appeal to more people than this one probably will.

	@gstntb26: sorry about that, but at least you didn't have to suffer long ;-) I do realize that not everyone knows the US postal abbreviations, but that's part of what makes this a challenging quiz. There are quizzes that come out all the time that I would like to do but don't have the knowledge necessary to do very well on them. For example, I would do poorly on a counties of England quiz and probably even more poorly if only abbreviations were accepted. On the other hand, I suspect there would be some for whom such a quiz might be interesting in part because of the extra challenge. I guess what I'm saying is that not all quizzes appeal to all people and I'm aware that this particular quiz in this format, especially with these constraints, may have a limited appeal to most players.

	@confused: thanks for your comments. Yes, this is another experiment with abbreviations. And wrong answers. I'm learning things from these experiments and I hope the guinea pigs don't feel like they're being gratuitously tormented in the process. The problem space I'm trying to explore is how to create a quiz in which the player has to carefully consider each answer and where a brute-force strategy of rapidly entering all the possibilities in the answer domain would be an unsuccessful one. So in this quiz there are three pools of states. Ten states that have a high percentage of federal land ownership (greater than 36%), ten states that have a low percentage of federal land ownership (less than 2%), and thirty remaining states which have a percentage of federal land ownership somewhere in the middle (between 2% and 36%). Guessing a low percentage state for a high percentage state or vice-versa causes the game to end. The player is allowed to guess the middle percentage states, without any danger of sudden death.

	I like the idea, but I would take the state name, rather than abbreviations. Just about every other quiz works that way. Otherwise people type Nevada and then their hearts are filled with extreme sadness because Nebraska isn't in the top 10.

	@deadperson21: ...but if they are resilient they will go back and read the directions that state "Use ONLY US Postal Service (USPS) two-letter state abbreviations to answer, state names are not accepted" and they will take the quiz again this time entering US State postal abbreviation answers for questions in the "US State Postal Abbreviation" column as prompted by the "US State Postal Abbreviation:" text field. That which doesn't kill them will make them stronger and they will live to love again. It's true that just about every quiz works the way you suggest, which is something that makes this quiz different, that sets it apart from the other quizzes.

	@tahiti: Yes, I see what you're getting at (in your response to me). I will continue to disagree with the use of abbreviations, but I figure your game, your call. I just suspect all the resulting confusion has to do with the incredibly low rating, which the idea and execution (except for post codes) truly don't warrant.

	@confused: well, of course, I'd rather have a high rating than a low rating, but what actually interests me is playing with the game options and the abbreviations. I'll admit the quiz was broken initially when I claimed to support both abbreviations and state names, but had never tested the quiz using the state names. I think it's an interesting game now that only abbreviations are supported. I suspect most of the low ratings came during the period when the quiz was broken. Ratings and plays are imperfect measures of the worth of a quiz. I'm constantly finding quizzes I think are real gems in the Random section of the User-Contributed page that have either low ratings or few plays (sometimes both). This quiz would have almost surely done better if it had taken state names rather than abbreviations, but that's not my priority. I really think the wrong answer feature has provided an opportunity to reward knowledge over brute-force answering tactics, but there is still much experimenting necessary to exploit that capability in the best way. A way that hopefully will appeal to some people. I've been frustrated with comments such as "most Sporclers can name all the states in 2 minutes" so all state-based quizzes should have very low time limits. I really think this ends up being a perverse incentive, that rewards quantity over quality. Wrong answers are a away of re-balancing those incentives. The best way of doing that is of course open to debate and experimentation.
