That's 155 countries; from Russia to Vatican City. Each of the sixteen quizzes contains an average of 12 subject countries, 52 bordering countries, and a time limit of 5 minutes. Simply click on the NEXT LEG link in the source section to go to the next quiz in the marathon.

	**** Announcing MULTI-WORD ABBREVIATIONS **** For multi-word country names I am accepting abbreviations consisting of the first letter of each word in the English name of the country. There are three exceptions to this rule: Czech Republic, Saudi Arabia, and Sierra Leone. For these countries the first word of the name will be accepted; namely, Czech, Saudi, and Sierra.

	@mein_caps: true, but then this is a pretty specialized audience. I suspect anyone making it to this point, through eight previous quizzes, pretty much knows what they're doing. The time limit probably isn't very challenging for most people, but then this is a marathon, not a sprint ;-) By that I mean I'm much more impressed that someone can came actually name all the countries bordering every country in the world and don't really care if it takes him 80 minutes or 62 minutes to do so. Everyone who has a pretty good mental world map can probably do each quiz in five minutes without really rushing. Of course, people will miss countries here or there (heck even my source, the CIA World Factbook, missed the Botswana and Zambia border), but it seems more important to me to get them all right then to do it quickly. Also, if someone happens to be a slower typist I don't want to make them retake the quiz just to get a chance to answer all the questions. On the other hand, if it's taking you more than five minutes to finish the quiz you probably don't know how all the countries fit together as well as you could, time to hit the world map a little more. It's a compromise time limit, of course, but I kind of like the fact that it's five minutes for every quiz in the series. I tried to impart a great deal of consistency among the quizzes in the series. By the way, I'm adding bordering bodies of water (oceans, seas, gulfs, bays, straits and bights, and even lakes) to this quiz series. The resulting quiz series will be called Border Country Biathlon and will debut at the beginning of March, 2011.

	REVISED Multi-Word Abbreviations: the rules for the multi-word abbreviations are very simple: use the first letter of each word in the common Sporcle name of the country to compose the acronym. Omit insignificant words: "and", "of", and "the". There are ten exceptions to this rule: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, El Salvaldor, Marshall Islands, Saudi Arabia, Solomon Islands, Sierra Leone, and Sri Lanka. For these exceptions the abbreviation is merely the first word of the multi-word country name: Bosnia, Costa, Czech, Dominican, El, Marshall, Saudi, Solomon, Sierra, and Sri. These exceptions were necessary in order to eliminate conflicts with other abbreviations. I was unable to come up with an acceptable abbreviation for South Africa and St Lucia. If you want to tackle an even bigger challenge check out the Border Country Biathlon which is similar to the marathon except that both bordering countries and bodies of water are included. I was able to structure the biathlon such that there are no repeats of subject countries in the whole quiz series, something I was not able to achieve in the marathon.
