	Starting February 1st, 2011, the complete Border Country Marathon will go live. The series includes every country in the world that shares a border with at least one other country. That's 155 countries; from Russia to Vatican City. Each of the sixteen quizzes contains an average of 12 subject countries, 52 bordering countries, and a time limit of 5 minutes. Simply click on the NEXT LEG link in the source section to go to the next quiz in the marathon.

There are three exceptions to this rule: Czech Republic, Saudi Arabia, and Sierra Leone. For these countries the first word of the name will be accepted; namely, Czech, Saudi, and Sierra.

	As I pointed out on name alternatives quiz - I got United Kingdom from trying Ukraine, and South Africa from Saudi Arabia. Undid your work trying not to duplicate countries!

	@confused: you're right. I always do the bonuses first when I'm testing the quiz so I didn't notice the Ukraine/UK problem. Although the Ukraine/UK problem predates my multi-word abbreviation scheme; I've experienced it before in other quizzes. I think it was never much of a problem because those quiz creators weren't as adamant about not allowing "buy one, get one free." The Saudi/SA problem doesn't appear if you do the quiz in a left-to-right, top-to-bottom manner. I've rearranged the order of the countries so you won't get UK from Ukraine as a regular answer if you answer the questions in the normal flow. You will get UK as a bonus answer but I'm OK with that as it's not a regular answer. However, you're correct in your overall point which is that the multi-word abbreviations, more specifically the exceptions (Czech, Saudi, Sierra, and Sri) rather than the acronyms, have made my goal of not getting more than one border country by answering a single question very difficult. I've fixed it to the extent that if you answer the questions in order the goal will be met. If you answer the questions out of order (skipping around) there's the possibility that you will get multiple border countries accepted for a single answer. It's the best I can do for now and still keep all the multi-word abbreviations. One solution down the road, as you've pointed out elsewhere, is to eliminate the exceptions and while I won't do that until the entire Border Country Marathon is released and has had a chance to be played for a while it's an idea that has very obvious merit down the road.

	I just went back to the beginning to start the quizzes over again to see if I can improve and noticed that France is in leg number 1 as well. Is this an oversight or are countries supposed to repeat throughout the journey?

	@mm5: Glad you like the series! It's true that France appears as a subject country in two quizzes, but it was intentional. I've tried to keep duplicates to an absolute minimum. An explanation of why I have duplicates in the marathon at all is posted below. To cover all the countries in the world in the way I wanted to cover them required at least 15 quizzes. I wanted the quizzes to all have as nearly as possible the same size and format, to be able to each stand on their own. It was not possible to do what I was trying to do without having some duplicates (that is, countries covered twice in two different quizzes). If the duplicates are really bothersome I suggest doing only the first ten quizzes as there are no duplicates within the first ten quizzes. Of course, the first ten quizzes do not cover every country in the world that has a border with another country, so it's a trade-off. If you can put up with a few duplicates (from quiz to quiz, never within the same quiz) I think the entire marathon is worth doing if you want to cover all the countries in the world. It's not a perfect solution, but it's the solution I went with.

	I had three main goals I was trying to attain with this quiz series. First, I wanted to cover every single country in the world that borders at least one other country. Second, I wanted to design each individual quiz so that within that quiz no border country is used more than once. That is, when you type in a border country it's the answer for only one subject country in the quiz. This is a very restrictive requirement because it essentially means that within a single quiz no two subject countries can border the same country. Third, I wanted to have each quiz fit comfortably on the screen so that no scrolling would be needed to see the whole quiz. This resulted in each quiz consisting on average of 12 subject countries, 52 border countries, and a time limit of 5 minutes. With the Border Country Marathon series I think I've achieved all three main goals. But I wasn't able to achieve a fourth goal, which would have been to cover each country no more than once in the series. In order to meet each of the three main goals it was necessary to include a few countries twice in the quiz series. I've tried to keep this to an absolute minimum, but I hope players understand why it was necessary. Finally, given the previous requirements, I think that 15 is the minimum number of quizzes possible for this series. Since Russia borders 14 countries there have to be at least 14 quizzes because Russia can appear as a border country only once per quiz. Plus Russia must appear once as a subject country, in which case it can't also be a border country in that quiz. The situation is the same for China since it too borders 14 countries. However, in practice I was unable to acheive the theoretical minimum of 15, since I needed an additional quiz to cover all the countries required to complete the Border Country Marathon.

	I was curious to see if avoiding repetition was part of the plan or not, so thanks for the explanation. It all makes sense now. You've definitely put a lot of work and thought into this and it definitely shows. I have definitely enjoyed each leg! It has also led me to try out some of your other quizzes and I look forward to seeing any future ones.

	REVISED Multi-Word Abbreviations: the rules for the multi-word abbreviations are very simple: use the first letter of each word in the common Sporcle name of the country to compose the acronym. Omit insignificant words: "and", "of", and "the". There are ten exceptions to this rule: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, El Salvaldor, Marshall Islands, Saudi Arabia, Solomon Islands, Sierra Leone, and Sri Lanka. For these exceptions the abbreviation is merely the first word of the multi-word country name: Bosnia, Costa, Czech, Dominican, El, Marshall, Saudi, Solomon, Sierra, and Sri. These exceptions were necessary in order to eliminate conflicts with other abbreviations. I was unable to come up with an acceptable abbreviation for South Africa and St Lucia. 	Added Southern Sudan, which if all goes according to plan will become a new country on July, 9, 2011. By the way, as Southern Sudan is a multi-word country name its abbreviation will be SS. Southern Sudan is a bonus in the rest of this quiz series.

	Hope you are enjoying the Border Country Marathon! If you want to tackle an even bigger challenge check out the Border Country Biathlon which is similar to the marathon except that both bordering countries and bodies of water are included. I was able to structure the biathlon such that there are no repeats of subject countries in the whole quiz series, something I was not able to achieve in the marathon. 	I enjoyed the entire series, especially Southern Sudan. I only had one answer remaining and couldn't figure it out, until I remembered, with 9 seconds to go, that Sudan will border it!!
