	Starting February 1st, 2011, the complete Border Country Marathon will go live. The series includes every country in the world that shares a border with at least one other country. That's 155 countries; from Russia to Vatican City. Each of the sixteen quizzes contains an average of 12 subject countries, 52 bordering countries, and a time limit of 5 minutes. Simply click on the NEXT LEG link in the source section to go to the next quiz in the marathon.

	**** Announcing MULTI-WORD ABBREVIATIONS **** For multi-word country names I am accepting abbreviations consisting of the first letter of each word in the English name of the country. There are three exceptions to this rule: Czech Republic, Saudi Arabia, and Sierra Leone. For these countries the first word of the name will be accepted; namely, Czech, Saudi, and Sierra.

	Add Cuba as a bonus to U.S. for Guantanamo Bay?

	@TheBigE1980: good one, it's been added. The US only leases the land from Cuba but the lease can only be broken by both parties and I can pretty much guarantee the US is never going to close Guantanamo (even Obama is opposed to closing Guantanamo). The rent is $4,085 per year, but practically it's free because Castro has refused to cash all but one check. The Wikipedia article is well-worth reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guantanamo_Bay_Naval_Base I especially like the part that there are still (at least as of 2006) two elderly Cuban nationals who work on the base, but live off the base. Castro doesn't allow the US to hire any other Cubans, these two are the last remaining from the original group working there before 1959. Anyway, the article is fascinating. Thanks for the suggestion.

	REVISED Multi-Word Abbreviations: the rules for the multi-word abbreviations are very simple: use the first letter of each word in the common Sporcle name of the country to compose the acronym. Omit insignificant words: "and", "of", and "the". There are ten exceptions to this rule: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, El Salvaldor, Marshall Islands, Saudi Arabia, Solomon Islands, Sierra Leone, and Sri Lanka. For these exceptions the abbreviation is merely the first word of the multi-word country name: Bosnia, Costa, Czech, Dominican, El, Marshall, Saudi, Solomon, Sierra, and Sri. These exceptions were necessary in order to eliminate conflicts with other abbreviations. I was unable to come up with an acceptable abbreviation for South Africa and St Lucia. 	I disagree with adding Cuba as a bonus for Guantanamo Bay. Firstly, if the US rents the land, it doesn't belong to the US. Secondly, aren't there US military bases in several other countries around the world?

	@Lyn_Marie: I think Guantanamo Bay Naval Base is a fairly unique situation for the US, perhaps akin to Akrotiri and Dhekelia, the UK Sovereign Base Areas on Cyprus. Yes, the US has bases all around the world (over 800), but these bases don't have quite the status of the one in Cuba. Though the base in Cuba is only rented, it's important to pay attention to the terms of the lease. It's a lease that can only be broken by the agreement of both parties. That fact makes it a very unique lease, in fact, I know of no other lease where that's true. I encourage you to read the Wikipedia article on the base. It's the only US base in the world where the US has no diplomatic relations with the country where the base is located. The "lease" doesn't have a term that ends, under its terms the US would have to agree to its termination, the country of Cuba clearly doesn't want the base there but is unable to do anything about it (and has not been able to do anything about it since 1960). The rent that the US is sending to Cuba wouldn't pay for a studio apartment where I live. I don't know of any other US overseas base that exists under those same circumstances. If you know of any, please let me know and I'll consider adding it as well. Most, if not all, overseas US bases except for Guantanamo Bay exist with the approval or at least acquiescence of the host government. That's definitely not the case in Cuba.

	Hope you are enjoying the Border Country Marathon! If you want to tackle an even bigger challenge check out the Border Country Biathlon which is similar to the marathon except that both bordering countries and bodies of water are included. I was able to structure the biathlon such that there are no repeats of subject countries in the whole quiz series, something I was not able to achieve in the marathon.
