	This Border Country Biathlon covers all 195 countries in the world in a series of sixteen quizzes. It is called a biathlon because it covers both land and water borders. It starts here: http://www.sporcle.com/games/tahitiwahini/border_country_biathlon_1_of_16 One can easily get to the next quiz in the series by simply clicking on the NEXT LEG link provided. For each country you are asked to name both its bordering countries and its bordering bodies of water. To be considered, the body of water must either border the country or have the country's border pass through it. Therefore a lake contained entirely within the borders of a country would not be of interest. The bordering countries will appear in alphabetical order, after which the bodies of water will appear, also in alphabetical order. If a country has both kinds of borders, the last border country will be marked ----- like this ----- to indicate that the remaining answers are bodies of water. Rivers are not included except in two instances. The bodies of water accepted include: bays, bights, channels, gulfs, lakes, oceans, passages, seas, straits, and a dam. You must specify the TYPE of the body of water in your answer; Strait of Luzon or Luzon Strait will be accepted, whereas Luzon by itself will not. Lakes are always preceded by the word Lake, while the words Channel, Passage, Ocean, and Sea always follow the name, for example: Lake Mweru, but Banda Sea. Bays, bights, gulfs, and straits are accepted both ways, for example: Bay of Bengal or Bengal Bay. The Atlantic and Pacific Oceans must always be preceded by either North or South to be accepted. The bodies of water used are those gleaned from the CIA World Factbook's maps of individual countries. For example, Arabian Sea, Bab el Mandeb, Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean, and Red Sea come from this map of Yemen: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ym.html If a particular body of water isn't mentioned on that map, it didn't make it into the quiz.

	This quiz accepts Multi-Word Abbreviations. The rules for the multi-word abbreviations are very simple: use the first letter of each word in the common Sporcle name of the country to compose the acronym. Omit insignificant words: "and", "of", and "the". There are ten exceptions to this rule: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, El Salvaldor, Marshall Islands, Saudi Arabia, Solomon Islands, Sierra Leone, and Sri Lanka. For these exceptions the abbreviation is merely the first word of the multi-word country name: Bosnia, Costa, Czech, Dominican, El, Marshall, Saudi, Solomon, Sierra, and Sri. These exceptions were necessary in order to eliminate conflicts with other abbreviations. I was unable to come up with an unambiguous abbreviation for South Africa or St Lucia. 	Surprised that the Alboran Sea doesn't get a mention. Bonus answer perhaps? Other than that I didn't like the inclusion of the dam. Landlocked countries should only have other countries as border (and perhaps a large lake)

	@Onno: The Alboran Sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alboran_Sea) is a bordering sea for Spain, but it does not appear on my source map (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/sp.html) which I am using as my guide for which bodies of water to include. I'm relying on the judgment of my source mapmakers for what to include because there are a rather large number of bodies of water that could be included. Bordering bodies of water are not as clearcut as bordering countries, there are probably dozens of bodies of water missing from my source maps of the 195 countries in the world. I trust the mapmakers included what they considered to be important and significant, but some were undoubtedly omitted due simply to space considerations. While I'm not eager to do this, and will be reluctant to add many more bodies of water to an already lengthy quiz series, in this particular case I think the Alboran Sea deserves to be included (as an official answer and not a bonus since the Alboran Sea doesn't suffer from any deficiency other than the misfortune not to appear on my source map).

	@Onno: The Itaipu Dam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itaipu_Dam) is located on the Parana River on the border between Brazil and Paraguay and is jointly owned and operated by both countries. It is the largest operating hydroelectric facility in terms of annual generating capacity in the world, surpassing even the Three Gorges Dam in China. The Itaipu Dam was selected as one of the seven modern wonders of the world by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Don't know if any of that will get you to like the dam, but the real reason it was included is that it is not a river and it appears as a named bordering body of water (Represa Itaipu) on my source map: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/pa.html Again, I'm relying on the editorial judgment of my source map for which bodies of water to include or not include. Bordering lakes large and small (and the reservoir formed by the Itaipu Dam is effectively an artificial lake) will be included in this quiz series if they are named on the source maps.
