Martinique is not a territory; it is a department of France and a fully incorporated part of the nation. It would be the same thing as including Michigan or Manitoba on this quiz.

thanks for the comment. i looked at 5 or so different sites and they all referred to martinique as an overseas department AND a territory, so that's why i included it. i'll look into it more.

What are your sources? It's not possible to be both a department and a territory, they're two very different things. Departments in France are integral parts of the Republic and are represented in French Government, Martinique is one of these and Mayotte will be in 2011. Territories (now called collectivities) have a level of administration within themselves.

if you look at this site http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_continent and go to north america you can see martinique and it says a department from france

one of my sources was bbc news that referred to it as a territory first and then a department (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/country_profiles/4537753.stm). but i looked on britannica.com and it does say it's a department, so i will change that. thanks for the correction.

Is Madeira a territory of Portugal, or is it more like the French départements?
