	Good subject for a quiz. I have some questions: 1) Where is the "unknown" part of Australia? I thought it just meant "southern land". 2) Ok, it's replendent, but what IS a Lanka? 3) How does Mexico mean "navel of the moon" ? I've always understood that it means "land of the Meshica (the name the Aztecs had for themselves)". A source might have answered some of these questions for me.

	@chriskotx: it comes from the Australis part of Terra Australis Incognita (phrase in Latin meaning "the unknown land of the South"): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia#Etymology Terra Australis Incognita was a hypothesized southern continent that first appeared on European maps in the 15th century: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terra_Australis So while Australis by itself simply means "southern" it was only a part of a common phrase used to describe the concept of an unknown southern land, and that idea was what gave Australia its name. Sri Lanka in Sanskrit means "resplendent island", so the "Lanka" part simply means island: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_Sri_Lanka#Sri_Lanka_and_related_names Yes, a source would have answered those questions. 	The etymology of Mexico is a bit messier and more speculative: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etymology_of_Mexico#Etymology "Navel of the moon" is one interpretation. Which itself could refer to a physical description of the land as described in the link or it could more generally refer to the idea of Mexico as the "center of the world."
