Influential can mean different things. In this instance it means how much did the athlete impact the face of sports.

Couldnt disagree more with the golf one. Nobody considered golf a real sport (except retirees and rich club members) until Tiger Woods. Usually the more recent athletes get too much credit, but in this case it is just the opposite. I can live with all of the others.

Jackie Robinson is a ridiculous oversight. Not your fault, Swartzjo, but what was TIME thinking? Robinson's influence went beyond sports, and within baseball, he's the only player to have his number retired league-wide, a testament to his unique influence.

I'm a horse racing fan but Secretariat was athletic yet not an athlete.
