| It would be nice if you included your source. Several of these words don't belong. According to the OED, many of them predate the Dutch colonization of North America: maid (1200), buoy (1300), stove (1450), dollar (1550), knapsack (1600). Also, some of them may not be or definitely are not of Dutch origin: maid is English through and through; buoy may have come from Old French or Old Dutch; dollar is German; knapsack, skate, and smuggle were either German or Dutch; and mannequin was originally Dutch but entered English in the late 1800s by way of French. But I agree with gowhere -- fun quiz, and I enjoyed the historical perspective. |
