| Okay, I hope the instructions were clear. You might be looking at the third column data for Georgia, Haiti and Moldova and say: "Now wait a minute, the farthest area from the capital is farther away than the nearest foreign capital. What gives?". That column shows two distances: the part of the country that is farthest away from its national capital, and the foreign capital that is closest to any point in the country. In a few cases these two points are the same (for instance northeastern Petite Martinique is both the part of Grenada farthest from St George's and the part of Grenada that another foreign capital is closest to). But in most cases, these points are different. To take Haiti as an example, Santo Domingo is closer to the Haitian border than the western Tiburon Peninsula is to Port-au-Prince, but all along the border with the Dominican Republic you're still closer to Port-au-Prince than to Santo Domingo. No part of Haiti is ever closer to Santo Domingo than to Port-au-Prince, and that's all that matters (well, in this quiz. I'm sure the Haitians have more pressing concerns). As to the unnecessary "country" hint column (oh, it's a country - very helpful!), that's there only for the bonus answer formatting (I needed two columns). |
