In 1912, Taiwan (Formosa) was under Japanese control, and remained so until after WWII. The Republic of China that formed in 1912 was on the mainland. The ROC didn't retreat to Taiwan and re-establish itself on the island until 1949.

You sure about that Taiwan fact? When the Communists were winning the Chinese Civil war, Shang Hai-shek/Jiang Jieshi (spellings?) fled the mainland and set up the ROC in 1949.

Taiwan isn't even the full ROC. 99% sure.. besides, can we even count Taiwan or the ROC as a country, seeing China's stance on it?
