One small addition: a Judge named Walter Jones received 1 electoral vote from a faithless elector from Alabama in 1956.

Just a suggestion, but I'd add an asterisk to the votes column for actual presidents. This quiz is hard enough already.

I think it's a great quiz - nice and challenging. To make it even harder, it could be organised as a first criterion by number of electoral college votes and as a second criterion by year, so that FDR is at the top and John Edwards is at the bottom. It would show more clearly that Nixon has received the second highest ever number of electoral college votes, an interesting fact I didn't know before. But it's perfectly fun as it is.

I second gelnika's comment. Wonderfully fun quiz, but it would be even more interesting and informative (plus I think it would be visually more appealing) if they were in order by votes and not by year.

Editor's choice! But I agree, you should arrange the answers by number of votes, not year.

John Tyler never had any electoral votes since he became president after Harrison died.

Tyler got no electoral votes for President, that is. "Faithless Electors" would be a good name for a band.

Wait...how did John Edwards get a vote in 2004? He was the VP candidate. Kerry was the presidential candidate.

And also, how did George Washington NOT get all the 1789 electoral votes? I thought he was elected unanimously.

How did only 89% get Abraham Lincoln?

Washington didn't get all of the electoral votes because of the system in place at the time, which had two votes cast by each elector with the highest vote getter winning the Presidency and the second highest the Vice-Presidency. Washington got a vote from every elector and his victory is therefore considered to be "unanimous." Edwards got a vote from a faithless elector in Minnesota in 2004. Actually, the elector voted for "John Ewards" but they counted it anyway. If you're going to make a splash by being a faithless elector, you should at least be able to spell.

I've added Walter Jones and rearranged the order in terms of vote total. It definitely does make it a harder quiz, which may or may not be a good thing. Time will tell. Thanks for all the feedback.

technically the 'S' in Harry S Truman shouldn't have a period, since 'S' is actually his middle name, it's not abbreviated.

@AStue: Some person who I feel it would not be out of line to call an attention **** decided to vote for John Edwards. True to form, he misspelled Edwards as "Ewards".

Oh, yes, please, let's start that argument again! Truman when signing used a period. So "technically" both representations are right and both are wrong.
@AStue: My guess would be a "faithless elector", an electoral college member, who, with the outcome in no doubt, simply voted for someone he or she wasn't supposed to vote for.

Poor Pinckney, I guess 1796 just wasn't your year. Neither was 1800. Or 1804. Or 1808.

Rockgolf has excatly why Edwards garnered one. A Faithless Elector in Minnesota cast his lot in with Edwards instead of Kerry. Wonder if he's still faithless now.

I find it ironic that Reagan, who is often called the best president of the 20th century, had fewer electoral votes than Nixon, who was one of the worse presidents.

eliana: Well, Nixon only had 25 more electoral votes than Reagan and both of Nixon's victories were complete landslides; as were Reagan's but Carter managed to get a few in '80
