I got about 70% on this quiz, which is fitting since I keep about 7 out of 10 commandments.

Not quite as stirring as Lou Gehrig's speech, but a great concept for a quiz nonetheless.

Wow. 20% got them all right. I was in the 80% group because I had a problem coming up with several of the right variant words. ex. sin/iniquity, oxen/cattle, visitor/stranger, house/gates.

I definitely would have done a lot better with the NIV. I guess I'm not very familiar with the KJV's wording.

In my denomination (Lutheran) we number them differently. Numbers 1 and 2 are combined and numbers 9 and 10 are separated to where 9 is "You shall not covet your neighbor's house" and 10 is all the rest.

As an athiest I'm reasonably happy with 60th percentile. mind you I've always thought 5-10 were fairly reasonable standards to live under anyway!

The ten commandments begin with "I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage" This is because they are not a list of rules whereby a person would earn God's acceptance but a standard of godly living for those who had already been saved by God. A quick look at the text of Exodus 20 will confirm this.

The 2nd commandment is loooong. I wonder if this is where Monty Python got the inspiration for the "Holy hand grenade of Antioch" portion from the Book of Armaments.

I always thought the placement of #5 was interesting. The first four are all basically about respect: no other gods, no false idols, no taking God's name in vain, honor your parents. Then, after all that: by the way, don't kill anybody.

In 1631, one printer made a major error: leaving out the word "not" in the commandment against committing adultery. This version is called the Wicked Bible, and is very valuable today.

melissa, #5 may seem out of place, but note that the commandments begin with the person's relationship with God, to their relationship with family and then their relationship with others. When it comes to the relationship with others, the first rule is "don't kill them." I think that's a pretty good place to start.

It must have been pretty foresighted of the KJV translators in 1611 to bring out a special US edition with American spellings of words like honour, neighbour and labour.

I always prefered the KJV version, simply because "Thou shalt not" sounds WAY cooler than "Don't".

Eleven 'nots', eleven 'nors' and one 'no' in ten commandments. Welcome to religion, folks.

I should actually clarify my above comment, on second reading I look like one of those angry people that comes on religious quizzes... to criticise religion! I'm a Christian myself but it just made me chuckle that my first guess was 'not' and it came up with more answers than commandments.

@JustANiceGuy - that's interesting; thanks! Don't remember ever noticing or being taught that in 8 years of Sunday school, but it makes sense. And actually, when you think about the first four being about your relationship with God, then the first two are versions of "thou shalt not kill" as well (in a Nietzschean sense, at least).

I totally forgot about number 7 . . . that doesn't mean anything bad about me, does it? On another note, judging by length two and four are by far the most important :)

#jenzahara- you don't have to be religious to agree with many of the commandments (i.e. killing people is bad.) they're kinda objective truths in that respect... (1-3 are the religious ones.)
