	@aah Yes, it does. Either pronunciation has three. I double checked before doing this. Some dialects may add another syllable, but that's not standard.n http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/virginia You can click on a button there and it will say it for you.

	I'm from WA and say Oregon with 2 syllables, and Virginia with 3. Didn't know Virginia was pronounced any differently...

	Not to quibble, but I pronounce Virginia with four syllables...and I live in the state! One pronounces Romania with four syllables...Slovenia with four syllables, so why isn't Virginia pronounced with four syllables? I'm not sure at what point that elision came into play.

	This is the case for a few states: Californ-ya, Georg-a, Pennsylvan-ya (unless we just don't know how to talk in the Northeast). I guess Webster's goes with the American habit of making "ia" into "ya". Just another example of regional diction and preferences.

	Yeah, it's an inherent problem with phonics. There are so many dialects and regionalisms of the English language that a quiz like this is invariably tough to pull off.

	@All There is no question that every dictionary (and even wikipedia) only lists one pronunciation for Oregon and Virginia. 	I'm British and most definitely pronounce Oregon and Virginia with 3. I think that even so it's the right call- with any quiz like this it would be impossible to account for all regional variations - I bet that almost every state could be pronounced somehow with a different emphasis Anyway. 	I checked the comments to see which states were most controversial. Oregon I figured would be. I was surprised to see so many people lashing out against Virginia (although I can see their point), and was also surprised to see the lack of discussion of Florida. I got it, and technically it does have three syllables, but almost everyone pronounces it Floor-duh. I suppose an exception would be its large Hispanic population, which would pronounce it Flo-ree-da. Or the rapper Flo-ri-da.

	In contrast to RJMurphy, I'm also British but pronounce Virginia with four syllables, so didn't type it in forgetting sloppy American pronunciation. I can't figure out what the other two I missed were (presumably the ones either side of Rhode Island if Virginia is so obviously 3 syllables for most Leftpondians)

	Wow dialects sure make a difference! I've lived in Oregon all my life, and true oregonians pronounce it: or-y-gun. NEVER or-gone. Definitely 3 syllables. With that said, I'm sure I pronounce other states incorrectly ie, Virginia, I pronounce with 3 (sorry!) :) nice quiz though.

	It wasn't until 10 years after learning the 50 states that I learned that it is in the norm to say Hawaii-yeeeeeee. I still hear people say just "huh-why" sometimes. I kinda took a lucky gamble trying it. Also I have NEVER seen it spelled with the apostrophe outside Sporcle.
