Isn't the State Department just a continuation of the "Department of Foreign Affairs?"

@snwidget Yes, but much like the change from War to Defense. On September 15, 1789, Washington signed a law to change the name of that department, but in doing so also changed some of the duties of that department, so it is technically a different entity, even though the first one only existed for two months with an interim Secretary.

Pretty sure FEMA was Cabinet-level prior to being folded into Homeland Security.

@jeffthepardoner Yes, during the latter years of the Clinton administration, the head of FEMA was given a Cabinet-level status, like many other positions. The note on the quiz says it only counts actual cabinet departments and not the dozens of other "cabinet-level" people who are allowed to attend the meetings.

Although the Attorney general was a member of the president's cabinet from 1789 onwards, the Department of Justice did not come into existence until 1870.

I had figured that the department which ended in 1913 had to be related to either the Department of Commerce or the Department of Labor which started the same year. It feels too obvious now.

Really good quiz. My suggestion is that you allow "attorney general" as an alternate answer for DoJ. But I can understand why it is not.

Very sad that we're at war so much that we have to have a permanent Department of Veteran's Affairs.
