The play is Othello, but Verdi's opera based on it drops the h.

Hey sproutcm, I nearly made the same mistake as the previous two commenters. Could we maybe have a bonus that states "Try a different spelling?" or something similar? Great quiz, as usual.

@SatinsfanJoe That's a great idea. I added that spelling comment as a bonus.

Lacrimal tripped me up. I've only ever seen it spelled "lachrymal".

This could be nitpicky but shouldn't it really be 'Queen Elizabeth II's husband'? Seeing as how Queen Elizabeth I had no husband. Maybe that didn't throw anyone else though.

: I've only ever seen it spelled "lacrymal", and I couldn't figure out why I didn't get it as it had 8 letters. Did a quick check and it is an accepted alternative. I'm sure

The hidden answer for Othello was misleading. I thought it was condescendingly telling me to think of a different Shakespearean play beginning and ending in o. Perhaps that answer would be better suited for the 7 letter category, since everyone knows it as Othello.

If the Othello bonus said "Try a six letter play/opera" then
that
would be misleading. But it says "Try a six letter
spelling
", which I thought was pretty generous and led me straight to the answer. I didn't see it as condescending either, as I'm sure many people made and will make the same mistake we did.

Out of interest, why is it a lioness's roar? Just that normally people refer to it as a lion's roar.

You'd think the three-letter answers would be better guessed since you're given the first and last letters.

Othello is the Shakespeare play. The question asks for the name of the Verdi opera which, being in Italian, is called Otello. Stumped only by the U of Maine question - almost impossible for a non-American. I enjoyed it.

Moving the tricky Maine question even further east, I grew up in PA and had no clue. My guess is if you live in New England, you have a 50/50 chance of getting it.

I grew up in Canada and live in Ohio, and I had heard of Orono, so you complainers can just pipe down. It's supposed to be obscure. Just what web site do you think you're on? Great quiz. It's funny what gets you -- I couldn't think of envelope.

It seems like a few of these could have multiple answers. Like, couldn't "a pause in activity" be stop? And I thought for sure "place to place a letter" was Scrabble.

I got 'em all, but I think Pawnshop was a bit of a stretch, given that it's typically two words. I'd also never seen "Lacrimal" spelled that way before. Good quiz overall though.

The name of the cooking herb is also oregano (actually, orégano) in Spanish. And of course there are also moon eclipes, but we must acknowledge that "When the moon blocks the sun or the earth casts its shadow over the moon" is too long a definition to fit in one line.

Another outstanding sproutcm quiz! A few comments based on previous comments: (1) Anyone who does American crossword puzzles regularly will know where the University of Maine is. (2) Although others have pointed it out, it bears repeating: The Verdi opera based on the Shakespearean play "Othello" is called "Otello". (3) @caramba: How do you know sproutcm is a "he"?? :-) (4) @WyattsTorch: I usually see pawnshop as a single word. (5) Fittingly -- 5 orbs!
