Considering I just used Batdance in a quiz of my own, how the heck could I miss it? Oh yeah, 'cause it's the most forgettable song Prince has ever done.

Venus wasn't also #1 with Shocking Blue and Bananarama?

@Victor2K. Well, yes and no. Both of those groups had #1 hits also titled Venus (Banarama covered Shocking Blue), but that song is different from the Frankie Avalon song of the coincidentally same title. Also, they were three different years, so only Franie's version fits the quiz in 1959. For each year on the quiz, only one song has been selected.

It's not meant to be an exhaustive list. For example, Honey was also a #1 for Mariah Carey. And there are other song titles not included: Usher had Yeah! the same year as Burn.
Great stuff, Sproutcm.

If you had just stuck to the one word titles 12 letters or longer, you'd have Ghostbusters!, Dreamlover, Bootylicious, Unbelievable, Superstition, Heartbreaker, Satisfaction and Irreplaceable.
And a lower average score. If you stuck to 3 characters or less, there would be "Ben", "Bad", "ABC" (all involving Michael Jackson), "War", "Why", "OMG", and Britney's "3".

I don't know about OMG counting as a one-word #1 song. I'm willing to accept it as a word, but not as a song.

As painful as the hits from the past few years have been, we should all be thankful the Macarena hasn't made a comeback.

Tequila was not just a song with a one-word title like the others in this quiz, but was literally a one-word song.

Point of technicality: The Mariah Carey "H" song hit #1 in 1993 (the week ending Dec 25, to be exact).

@BamaRainbow And it continued and it was the #1 on the Hot 100 for the first three weeks of 1994, being the only hit song that was one-word long for that whole year.

No, you remember a time when only a single artist was given credit. Outside of possibly Bobby McFerrin and Lenny Kravitz, I can't think of any solo acts having actually singing all parts, playing all instruments, writing the song, and producing a hit record.

This raises the rarely-asked question of whether SexyBack and Bootylicious are synonymous.

My Billboard Book of Number One Hits has finally paid for itself! I can't believe Macarena was #1 in the US for 16+ weeks, didn't hit #1 in the UK, was kept off by The Spice Girls. *SHIVER ME TIMBERS*

Was hoping (not very hard) for a bonus on other one-word Fleetwood Mac hit titles! Rhiannon... nope. Landslide... nope. Tusk... nope. Sarah... nope. Gypsy... nope! Just couldn't come up with Dreams!

@rockgolf: But even in those "feat." songs, there's a lot of uncredited people. It would be a bit dumb to add them all to the "feat." list, though. I think it's usually a marketing strategy, having "important" people featured in your song.

So sad that Lorne Greene's classic "Ringo" has been all but forgotten. It was so popular in its day that Greene released a second version in French!

What I learned today: Theres 3 Ms in MMMBop. I tried it with 4 and when it didnt work, actually thought that it might have been 2 words and MAYBE they had another #1. Seeing some other songs on this list (i. Macarena) it didnt seem quite as ridiculous a proposition as it otherwise would.

ok quiz, I think it would have been more fun to just stick with words that are actually words. Like Scrabble words. Lose the proper names etc.
