JBZ: how do you pronounce HTML? "Hutmeal?" Acronyms have to form a pronounceable word. So, while SALT, AIDS and GATT may be acronyms, the majority are not.

starkittendanger: Merriam-Webster and Wikipedia beg to differ. An acronym only has to be formed from the first letter of each word.

GREAT quiz, with no overlaps (and only one near-overlap). HDPE seems too obscure to _me_, but I eventually brute-forced it.

Speaking of PETA, if anyone out there has never seen the following, I suggest you immediately go check it out, and you're gonna want to block out about five minutes for mildly amused bewilderment: http://www.peta.org/sea_kittens/. Sea kittens!

An acronym is a type of abbreviation. According to Merriam-Webster, an acronym is a word (implying pronounceability), but allows for non-pronounceable acronyms (like FBI) as a secondary definition. M-W did teach me, though, a new word, which is the best one to use for these cases: "initialism". It dates to 1899. "Acronym" is not quite right, and "abbreviation" is too general -- I recommend "initialism" for future quizzes.

ESPN doesn't actually stand for anything (Wikipedia is...gasp...incorrect). It USED to stand for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network, but now it's just ESPN, Inc. http://sports.espn.go.com/sitetools/s/help/espn-faq.html#ESPN

@WinnieNicklaus. I considered both those things when I started it. Technically, Acronym would have worked fine, but I knew some people would complain that they weren't pronounceable. And, I considered initialism, which is totally correct in each of these cases, but since no one knew what the word means, it would have been a disaster. I wish people used www.m-w.com more. So much time could be saved on Sporcle if people looked things up.

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, which administers the MCAT, "Admission" is singular, not plural. See http://www.aamc.org/students/mcat/.

There are too many initialisms and stuff. People need to start naming things with simpler names. It seems like people go out of there way just to have an initialed name for something.

Great quiz, just one thing... SALT also stands for Society for Applied Learning Technology. I knew both, so it didn't cost me anything, but others might make the same initial mistake.

I'm surprised by how low SASE is doing. Guess everyone's too young to know about snail mail.
