created by
sproutcm
Enter an answer in the box below
Correctly named answers will show up below
Answers do not have to be guessed in order
The names are in ALPHABETICAL ORDER to guide you. Popular means the name was in the top 100 both years. Note: Qaqaq and bcd came up with this quiz idea, and I just implemented it.

Male names were easier to come up with. Many of the female names seem pretty uncommon to me. Interesting quiz.

I agree to googlebird and errgreen. Great quiz, a bit tricky (but thats ok as it gives people a challenge), male names are easier and female names don't seem that popular and it needs quite a bit more time, at least 9 or 10 minutes.

Ooh, some close ones: Emily, 103->6; Mary, 1->102; Lucy, 71->101. Of course, I guessed all three.

Jacob was popular years before the Twilight saga came along. The high school where I teach has had a bunch in recent years.

You see a quiz like this, you think "Oh, I know names ..." you miss about half of them ...

Fascinating. One thing: earlier postings mention Jacob as #1 because of Twilight; the quiz I just completed showed answers with no Jacob anywhere, and Andrew as #1 ???

It would be interesting to know if any names in the top 100 switched from male to female.

@chikka2: Jacob is a bonus answer. As FearTheManatee mentioned, it went from 102 to 1. Since it wasn't in the top 100 in 1909, it's just a bonus and not a regular answer.

@Mutford. Nope, no names switched from masculine to feminine from 1909 to 2009. However, there are two bonus answers of names that were in the top 100 in 1909 on both the male and female list.

I'm with AhLeah! There's a special place in my heart for quizzes that show me just how little I know sometimes. Didn't realize how popular some of these names are/were.

I was somewhat handicapped in that I didn't notice until the last minute that there were also women's names. D'oh! Here's to Mary and Jacob.

Do people actually name their kids just "Jack"? It's a nickname for John.

Jack is a nickname for both John (as in Jack Kennedy)and a nickname for James (as derived from the French Jacques or Italian Giacomo), but it is also given as a name in its own right.
