	John Cazale actually died almost nine months before The Deer Hunter came out and before the movie was finished with production. He had terminal bone cancer before filming began, and was almost replaced until Meryl Streep (his fiance) and Michael Cimino (the director) threatened to quit the project. His scenes were therefore filmed first (which probably made logistical sense anyway since a vast majority of the scenes in which he is not in are the more breathtaking war scenes).
