I got most of these answers from the source, although I had to do a little research to see what modern-day country the islands he visited belonged to. If you guys want, I can add extra info (year, specific islands, etc.) As always, comment with suggestions on how to make it better. Enjoy!

Nice quiz, but I have one quibble: I do not think Cape Verde should count. First, New World is usually taken to mean the Americas. But second, even if we go by your definition of "regions previously unknown to Europeans", according to Wikipedia the Portuguese had a settlement in Cape Verde since 1462, so it should be ruled out. For similar reasons, the Canary Islands should not be a bonus.

I think it would be better if you split off the various territories of countries whose metropoles either aren't in the New World or weren't visited by Columbus (or both). Guessing "United States" and "France" is kind of silly. Otherwise, a very good quiz.

I like this quiz a lot, but I have a couple suggestions for thought.
1. Puerto Rico should be a bonus and not listed as an actual answer because Puerto Rico does not equal the United States
2. I think it would be interesting to expand this quiz to list ALL of the countries he has been known to visit (new world and old world)
3. I like the idea you had for adding some of the extra info to the quiz to make it even better...Hope this helps

@pusbball1: Thanks for the suggestions. I kinda did a makeover of this quiz and here it is. Puerto Rico and the US are a bonus now, and I added in the new information, such as year and islands he visited. Although I thought it was appropriate to only add the old world countries as bonuses, as I wanted to place emphasis on his four voyages. So now, I have several bonuses and lots of information to make most everyone happy.

I know it doesn't fit the New World parameters of the quiz, but as long as you've got a few western European bonuses, you could add Ireland and Iceland. Columbus sailed to the Arctic by way of the British Isles on a merchant venture in 1477! http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/127070/Christopher-Columbus

Trivia: Saint Kitts was named after Christopher Columbus.

@explodingtrees: No it wasn't. As the name clearly demonstrates, it was named after Saint Christopher. The formal name of the island is "Saint Christopher Island" in English and "Saint-Christophe" in French.

Couldn't the quiz just be called "How many Caribbean and Central American countries can you name?"

I know he visited the modern-day Dominican Republic so I started typing it in and got Dominica and then thought to myself "Oh. Must be the same thing." and I never typed Dominican Republic. Just goes to show you how limited my knowledge of the Caribbean is.

Tacking on to chriswbennett's comment, there's more than enough time to just name every "New World" country, which are only 35 in total.

I understand why some answers were bonuses, France, Netherlands, etc. (old world countries that now have territories in the new world) but why would the US be a bonus?

shawnoc, USA is a bonus answer because Puerto Rico is not one of the 50 states, and not considered a part of the country by most Americans. It's citizens cannot vote for president and have no representation in the U.S. House of Representatives or Senate.

@ClintT13: Most Americans consider PR (along with all US territorial claims) part of the US. Personally, I feel the US should be an actual answer and not a bonus answer. PR is not represented in the US Congress but its citizens are citizens of the US and its territory is indeed controlled by the United States. It does have a degree of autonomy, and San Juan is never included in quizzes about the largest US cities because of PR's unincorporated status. However, PR is nonetheless a part of the US and is recognized as such by the US government and the vast majority of Americans. I hope one day we won't have to worry about this issue at all as support for Puerto Rican statehood grows.

@ Mistakenblood : Yeah I feel the same when they exclude New Caledonia and French Polynesia from France, yes they have their own regional governments, but it is France nonetheless... The French flag is raised in Noumea or Papeete and I guess the US flag is also present in Porto Rico next to the Portorican flag...

Puerto Ricans are US citizens; there is a federal district court in San Juan. Just because it is not one of the 50 states does not make it any less part of the US, which is a "New World" country (unlike St Martins/Martinique/etc., which belong to "Old World" powers).

It's a great idea for a quiz and well executed, but has the major drawback (which isn't the quiz setter's fault, obviously) that it's possible to get 100% without knowing anything about Columbus, just by guessing Central and South American countries. Perhaps cutting a minute or two off the time would help to discourage guessing?

Great quiz! It prompted me to do some brief extra reading on Columbus - I got 10 bonuses, but am wondering if this list is exhaustive? From what I have read some sources claim he visited Chios, in modern Greece (which might increase the possibility he set foot on Turkey?), it appears he also traded extensively in West Africa, visiting Elmina, Ghana. I am no expert so can anyone shed some light? Are these places not scholarly recognised?

@jsamuel: None of those places are featured on this list as they are not included in the modern definition of the "New World"

Can you accept "Stkittsandnevis" please. I gave up trying to work out how you'd decided to spell it. Is there a standardized sporcle format for that country by the way?

Thanks Mistakenblood, you're correct, I didn't quite read the title and notes correctly. However, my question was directed at including the places I mentioned as bonus answers, much in the same way Italy, Spain, UK etc were. I realise that the bonuses were not the point of the quiz, but if some are listed why not list them all?
