| Actually, the first names of Tolstoy and Trotsky were the same (in Russian: Лев, literally 'lion'), so Leo and Leon could in theory be used interchangeably for both. Why Tolstoy is Leo and Trotsky is Leon is only a matter of custom. (The same happens with Joseph and not Iosif Stalin, or the other way around: Yuri and not George Gagarin). Seemingly the modern trend is towards using the actual first names in the person's language, while in older times they were usually translated. If Picasso or Marx had lived in the Renaissance, probably today they would be known as Paul Picasso or Charles Marx. |
