I know there's a disagreement about the spelling, but I still think Ulaanbaatar belongs here.

Again debatable, but I think there's also a case for including Myanmar.

kyrgyzstan should be in the countries and as sporcle does it'd be good if you could accept sana for sanaa

Is there a case for not including Myanmar? Especially if Rwanda is included. The 'y' may function as a vowel in the English pronunciation, but not in the local pronunciation and the same is true of the 'w' in Rwanda.

There is always a debate on the 'y' and 'w' as vowels issue. I have added Myanmar and will see what happens.

Myanmar should be a bonus, I think.

You just need a clear definition of what a vowel is. If it is just the 5 traditional vowels, then Myanmar and Rwanda should be on this list. If it is based on the role of the letters in the word, you need to consider whether you are talking about the English pronunciation or the local pronunciation. Obviously it would make the most sense to use the English pronunciation, since some of these places have different names in their local languages. In that case, neither Myanmar nor Rwanda should be on this list, and perhaps Managua should be.

Simplest solution is to itemize what letters you consider vowels in the instructions. People will still complain, but at least it will be stated explicitly what is and is not a vowel for this quiz. Very good quiz btw!

wgisland & midnightdj: Great suggestion, I have included it in the instructions. Which means that I now have to include Kyrgyzstan as an answer. I hope it is reasonable solution, though I am sure some sporclers won't like it.

Ottawa has an O, so it doesn't qualify.

@slipkid: You say you now have to include Kyrgyzstan as an answer... and you're afraid some Sporclers won't like it? I must be in a parallel universe.

Also I was confused when I read the instructions why you specified that *W* isn't a vowel, since it's never mistaken for one like Y. I would guess Rwanda had something to do with it. Let me tell you... the "w" in Rwanda is NOT used as a vowel. It's another consonant, in a rare case when there are two consonants at the beginning of a word that are hard to pronounce, so you have an imaginary vowel in between.

@wardy44: The point of the quiz is not to name countries and capitals with the most 'a's, but instead to name the countries and capitals where the only vowel is 'a'. JamaIca has an 'i'.

Haha it's funny how our minds neglect certain things. I definitely thought O-ttawa and U-laanbataar would be on there!

First the typical "sporcle brain" comment: Warsaw and Jakarta no, Tarawa and Manama after a few seconds... Then another typical "sporcle brain" comment - me mind's slipping. Alaanbaatar (they really schould change it), Canbarra, Amstardam, Panama Cyty, Antananarava, Naypyadaw, Srajayawardanaparakatty...

I just realized that most northern European capitals don't evan have an "A"- Stockholm, Helsinki, London, Dublin, Moscow, Oslo, Berlin, Brussels, Luxembourg, Vilnius, Minsk, Bern...

By not reading the directions, I miss Kyrgystan? I'm sorry, but there's no possible way that anyone could think that the Ys in Kyrgyzstan are anything other than vowels. If they aren't, then the name is unpronounceable. Perhaps it could be made a bonus answer? I don't like missing an answer for a reason that defies logic. Yes, I know, I should always read the directions. But the title of this was pretty unambiguous to me: name things that are spelled with As and *no* other vowels. Kyrgyzstan—its Sporcle cachet notwithstanding—doesn't make the cut.

This quiz is brilliant. When I started I thought the initial letters were going to make it a bit on the easy side, but boy was I wrong. I thought I'd gone all round the world in my head looking for the first C country, but I guess I just dismissed the big 3 of North America without even thinking about it...

Rather than debating over the meaning of the word "Vowel," why not just change the instructions to say "doesn't contain e, i, o or u?"

Myanmar might be debatable, but Kyrgyzstan should not be. Unless it is pronounced Krgzstan - which it isn't - the Ys are vowels.

I agree with everyone that thinks that "Y" should be counted as a vowel. I don't understand the logic in why it's not. ..and yes, I didn't read the entire instructions until afterwards and saw "Kyrgyzstan" among the answers.

Kyrgyzstan and Myanmar should move to bonus answers. Y isn't always a vowel, but it certainly is in those words.

Yet another comments thread blighted by the "I didn't read the instructions, but I object to the fact that they don't say what I think they ought to have said" people.
